I would like to condense and audio book down. The original audi
book is 17 cd's. Is there a way that I can compress it and make i
fit onto fewer cdr's

Yes, convert .wav to .mp3
 
You can get 24 hours on a 80min CD-R if you encode to 64kb/s MP3 or WMA.

Make sure the filenames are sequential - 01-17, not 1-17.
 
Of course, the above suggestions assume the OP doesn't *need* to maintain
the CD-Audio format. Problem is, the OP never made that clear. If you
follow-up on the above suggestions, make sure your CD player supports mp3,
wma, whatever, playback. Many older CD players do NOT, they will only
accept CD-Audio format. The CD player is always the "fly in the ointment"
when it comes to these conversions. And just because your CD player
supports CD-R doesn't mean it can support mp3/wma either, it might only be
CD-Audio as well.

The OP can go to wal-mart and buy a CD player for $20, DVD for $30, or flash for $40.
