First the Audio.
I am using the onboard sound on my GA-M59SLI-S5 (NVIDIA® nForce 590 SLI
chipset). Before I installed Vista (was using XP) it worked great. I was
able to out over my headphones and over my speakers (makes it alot easier to
switch since you just turn one off). The quality was great.

Well then I installed Vista. I am using the sound drivers from
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=2302 ( 2006/12/27 Vista 32 bit).
Now I am having all sorts of problems. Everytime I restart the settings
under "control pannel" --> "sound" --> "properties" (of the digital out)
change. And the correct settings also change (sometimes 96.0 KHz works other
times it doesnt). Now the sound quality sound attrocious. I have
re-downloaded the drivers (several times) uninstalled my drivers (several
times) and put the new ones. To no success.

What bothers me even more is that the times I get low quality over my
optical I also get low quality over my headphones. Which are not optical or
digital.

Also have not been able to output over both at the same time.

Video

I do not know if this has been addressed or is a MS problem.
I am currently using a GeForce 8800 and the new Beta drivers for Vista.
When I have Aero theme activated (which I don't know why it isn't default
for home premium) when there is a screen darkening (like when you try to
install something there is a message that pops up and the rest of the screen
dims) there is also a *glitch* is the best way I can describe it. The screen
just looses focus and its as if the vertical and horizontal synce have issues
for just a quarter of a second.

You need to complain to Gigabyte about the sound card driver issues.

As for the screen darkening, that is entirely normal. Your computer is
switching to a lower-privilege level to prompt you for permission and the
screen darkening is a visual cue to that. No problem there, no bug; normal
behaviour.

I've been looking through posts here as I've been having audio/video issues
as well. Everything was great when using XP but now with Vista all of a
sudden I'm having audio/video problems in iTunes, playing DVDs, internet
radio, etc. This is definitely an MS issue.

Not an MS issue but a lack of Driver support. You have to remember that
Microsoft alone cannot make generic drivers that will work for all the
different devices out there and so you will have to look towards the
manufactures to provide the correct driver. If the vender isn't going to
release driver support for the device your using, you might want to look into
switching to a different vender or find one with the same vender that has
driver support for Vista.

My graphic card is a nVida GForce 7950 GX2 and my sound card is a Sound
Blaster (can't think of the model off the top of my head but it's one with
gaming in mind). When I installed Vista Ultimate, it detected my video card
with no problem but it didn't for my sound card. I just went online and
downloaded the driver for vista and sound started working again. And since I
don't like generic drivers, I even downloaded the nvidia driver for my
graphic card.

Now, if you speific what kind of issues/problems your having, then it could
be an MS issue but I think it's still more on the lines of an driver issue.

Going back to greg_p issue on the video, I think this is more of an monitor
issue that looses it's horizontal and vertical sync, but most monitors has
issues like that when something changes too fast on screen. What kind of
monitor are you using?

I understand screen darkening thats not the problem. But the screen becoming
un readable (that includes the message box that pops up) is.
I understand that these were most likely driver problems and i dont expect
MS to come out with drivers for it. Just wanted to make sure.

But the audio seems very strange that it doesnt save my settings (the MS
sound settings)
