audacity problem

I'm wanting to fade out the music in a powerpoint presentation. I have
downloaded audacity. However when I import the selected track and click
play, it just zooms through it with a click noise. I've tried to highlight
the end of the track and apply the fade out effect but when I press play to
review it again just races through with a click noise. No music is heard
either way. What am I doing wrong?

Greatly appreciate assistance.

I imported audio file from My Music folder where music was downloaded from
windows media player.
Yes there are "blue bars".

Well, this isn't an Audacity board, but I'm sure there are some users here
who may have ideas.

First thing I'd ask is how you imported the track and if you see sound waves
(blue bars) in the file to begin with. The "blue bars" I'm referring to
should look similar to what you see at the bottom of this page where it says
"before cleanup" and "after cleanup."

I don't have any music with digital rights management embedded, so I can't
check this, but it's possible that Audacity is recognizing the DRM in the
file and so it doesn't allow editing.

However, if your sound waves are responding to the fade, then it should be
okay.

Did you download and install the LAME MP3 encoder? There are links to it
from the Audacity home page. Maybe that will help.

I also found this http://www.audacityteam.org/forum/ It might be worth
checking out.

Hello Steph

Sorry to hear you are struggling with the sound file. If you would like
to email the file to me (don't mind how large it is), and let me know
how many seconds of fade you want at the end of it, I'll be happy to
do the edit for you, test it in PPT and email it back.

Click on "View Profile" in my name above in the header to this message,
then click on the underlined dots in my email address to reveal my full
address, but you can probably guess it anyway!!

Chris

The clue is in the answer...

Thanks Chris. If by end of day I don't have this figured out I may e-mail
file to you. I think what has happened is when I download music to windows
media player it is in the form of a wma file and I need to figure out how to
change these files to wav or mpg? When I click on the album file with list
of songs and select file type wav or mpg no song listings are displayed but
will display if select all file types. Can you help me figure out how to
download songs in right file format or does this even make sence?

John,
Thanks--I downloaded the alto MP3 and added the song however it says it
can't decode the file-please install related codec for it. I have no idea
where to get this. Can you advice how to do this?
Also am I picking up in what I read on other threads that I will not be able
to email my powerpoint presentation with embedded music in this mp3 format?
Would I be able to if it was wav? I greatly appreciate advice.

John previously I had tried to covert the file from where the media existed
in My Music folder. I extracted it directly from the cd and it worked. Now
just curious about my previous mp3 and wav question to see if one will work
if I want to send my presentation by e-mail? Thanks so much for everything!

Thanks Echo. I think I have things figured out now. Appreciate everyone's
help.

Download this which will convert wma to mp3
http://www.yuansoft.com/convert_help.html

and then audacity to fade
