I found your answer(s) to Ray regarding back-ups within
XP most helpful.

However, I am left with a (dumb?) question: When using
the method described in this link
[http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;308422&Product=winxp], where does the saved data go?

In other words, if the hard-drive crashes, how would
this "saved" data be retrievable?

The article implies that you would backup to some other media. Actually, XP
backup doesn't support much in the regard on its own. If you have a CD
burner and didn't wish to purchase additional software, you could backup to
the hard drive and then copy the backup file to a CD. With packet writing
software installed such as the Drag to Disk or Direct CD component of Easy
CD Creator, www.roxio.com or the InCD component of Nero, www.nero.com, you
can backup directly to CD. You need to check the websites for versions
compatible with XP and a list of drives compatible with the software.

The answer to your question is, it is up to you to decide to where you wish
to save and keep your backups. As you mention, simply storing them on your
hard drive, even on a separate partition is chancy, hence, if you don't have
a CD burner or some other device that can archive backups for you, you
should consider adding such a device for this purpose. With DVD burners
having dropped so low in price, you might want to consider one of those.

I have both Easy CD and Roxio -- and I actually bought a
computer based on the fact that it had a CD burner -- to
use for back-ups. Sad that it's not an "easy" option
with "conceited" XP design. Thank you for the hand-
holding!

You're welcome, Regina. The "Help" on this subject within XP is not as
clear as it could be and it doesn't thoroughly explain backup, making too
many assumptions.
