Running two comps on a D-Link DI-624 Router(801.11G):
Router is on XP HomeVersion comp. Matched PCI Card is in
W2kComp. File Sharing and Security enabled on both. Both
in the same workgroup. Hex security keys match. DHCP
transferred to Router by default. PCI card and Router are
configed as infrastructure. Internet access from both ok.
Neither comp can access one another.

Problems: Neither status lights work, indicating device
not functioning properly or defective. W2k comp can see
both comps, but path not found for XP comp and as such is
unusable. XP comp sees nothing, not even itself.

Searched knowledge base...nothing seems applicable, and D-
Link support says it is a Windows config issue, and won't
go there. Am considering scrubbing the W2k and going back
to W98. W2k Pro is just administratively obscure to muck
things up. Advice, O Gods of the newsgroups? Praise,
Obeisance and Homage to the solver!!!

Since Internet access is OK on both computers and W2k can see both
computers, I agree with what D-Link told you.

These tips should help you get everything working:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
the local area network connection -- it's for use only on a direct
modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

My warmest thanks, Mr. Winograd; your site has a wealth
of information. Removing IC Firewall alone has opened the
XP end of file sharing. Tomorrow will bring experiments
in applying your recommendations to the W2k Comp. For the
present, it seems I have a bit of reading to do. Once
again, thanks! I'm attending ITT and your level of
proficiency is what I'm shooting for. Excellence is often
a reward unto itself. Jeff

You're welcome, Jeff. I'm glad that my suggestions have already
helped you, and I hope that tomorrow's experiments will succeed.
