Attempting Clean Boot

I have 2 independent PCs running XP Home Edition w/Service Pack 3. I am the
only user and system administrator of both. The "clean boot" process works on
one. On the other I get an error that 'an access is denied while attempting
to change a service and I may have to log on as system administrator to make
a change' .

What is the name of the service?

Thanks for the reply. It does not tell me what the 'service' is, just that
access is denied and, therefore, I cannot do a 'clean boot' procedure as
defined by Microsoft.

Does anything apprear in Event Viewer?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

What antispyware program or suite are you running on that PC?

Are you sure that that PC is malware-free? If so, how did you determine
that?

I have McAfee on the PC with the problem. A full scan returns no problems. I
have Trend-Micro on the PC that will perform a clean boot.

It is well documented that McAfee often interferes with many functions,
presumably including clean booting. I remember once starting a PC that
had McAfee installed in Safe Mode and McAfee was *still* running! You
might need to use AutoRuns to configure a "cleaner" clean boot:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Also, you didn't answer the other question concerning malware; that
*always* needs to be ruled out first.

I checked the 'EVENT VIEWER' the failure is identified as a security
problem. 'Unknown User Name or Bad Password. The process was indentified as
'Advapi'. I did a Google search on this and found Advapi.exe is malware. One
article identified the same problem I have when trying a clean boot
attributed to Avapi. All articles advised to get it off the system assap.
McAfee doesn't pick it up. I am trying to find ways to get rid of it.

I have the same problem and searched for an answer and found out that the
problem is a gliitch in a Windows XP that was installed on some Dell
computers. I did find that there are dervice packs for this problem and at
one time did find them. There were several but did not do the download at the
time but forgot to bookmark them and can't seem to find them now.
Did you get your problem solved and if you did what was your solution??
Thanks, Josephv
