It gets to the part that says 14 minutes left and
registering components and then freezes. The only way I
can shut system is to pull the main plug. When It starts
up again the same window comes back asking for the disc to
be reinstalled. It then goes back to 37 minutes download
time left and then gets to the same point and freezes
again. I can't do anything else with the computer and I
don't know how to get rid of this screen and start again.
Escape or Control-Alt-del does nothing.
Helpful advice would be much appreciated

Go the HD mfg. web site and get a copy of the setup/repair utility and copy
it to a floppy. Boot to the floppy and run the utility on your HD to check
for errors and do repairs. Reformat the HD with the utility. Now try a fresh
install of XP

If you hold the power button in for about 4 or 5 seconds the system should
shut down without having to pull the plug.

Anyway try removing all unnecessary cards like your modem or network card,
sound card, etc leaving only the video connected. Also disconnect any USB or
other non essential peripherals. Try repartitioning and reinstalling again
with a bare bones system and see if that works. You can add items back once
XP is installed and let Plug n Play pick them up.
