Our police department uses OE. I set them up with it
because I figured it would be the easiest for them to use.
As of the last couple of days, they are receiving emails
with attachments that they are unable to select. It shows
the attachment's title, file format, etc. but is shadowed.
I could understand if it was blocking attachments that
contained a virus, but it's still allows the rest of the
email to be read. It wouldn't allow them to receive an
attachment from me that was an Excel file, but did let
them receive an attachment with a .doc file. We have
noticed that it will not allow them to receive attachments
that they do not have the corresponding program for. They
do not have Excel, but should still be able to receive the
attachment. I've never heard of an email program
withholding an attachment because the program was not
installed on the computer. When I was in screenprinting,
we would receive graphic files from programs that we
didn't have, but were still able to save them. They were
importable into other programs. I really don't understand
what's going on here. It wasn't like this a few days ago,
this is a new problem. It says "OE removed access to the
following attachments in your mail". WHY??? and how do we
fix it? Did it come in through a Windows update?

I see that Liz is having the same problem and I'm glad to
see that I'm not the only one, but Gordon's suggestion to
change security settings seems a bit drastic to me. The
only option I see under Security that might make a
difference is to uncheck the "Do not allow attachments to
be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" box.
I am afraid to uncheck it because that seems like I'd be
opening the door for viruses to march right through. Any
suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry, but those are your only options in OE...either keep the security or
disable it. Actually, you have a third option, which is to click the
Forward button, and then save the attachment from the forward message
window...but it doesn't make the attachment any safer than it was before
(either it's safe to begin with or it isn't safe to begin with).

If you have a good antivirus program installed and you keep it updated, AND
you educate your users not to open attachments that look suspicious or ones
they don't recognize, you can probably disable the attachment security.
