Attachments in Windows Mail

I just recently purchased Vista, and it took me awhile to get used to it, and
I was advised by a Microsoft tech to get rid of Incredimail (which I did,
even though I loved it), but now, using Windows Mail, I can't open any
attachments that have a video (wmv.) I have to forward the whole email to my
hotmail account, then I can open it. What tweaks do I need to do?

Wow, this is the first time I've used this, I can't believe you answered so
fast! Anyway, I can't save it to a disk because nothing happens when I click
on the "paperclip", it's not "bright", its just grey. I tried right
clicking, but nothing happened, no error messages, no sounds, nothing. I
read a few other posts that mentioned disabling any antivirus for emails, but
I only have the free AVG so is this an issue?

Are you trying this in the Preview window? You should still be able to
right-click on the paperclip.

Or, double-click on the message to open it fully. Do you see the attachment
listed? You should be able to double-click it to open it, or right-click on
it to see the Save option.

Tools > Options, uncheck Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that
could potentially be a virus?

It worked! Thanks so much, you're a star. Now I can finally get rid of
hotmail, which I only kept open to get my attachments. One question, will
the AVG still protect my computer from viruses in emails?

You're welcome.

Others in this group have said that scanning e-mail is not necessary and can
cause problems with Windows Mail. I would be careful however with attachments
that are executables (.exe) or screensavers (.scr). Generally, it is a good
idea to not open attachments unless you know and trust the sender.

Yes!

With email scanning OFF, but the rest of an AV package functional, any
attempt to open an attachment will cause that attachment to be saved to a
temporary folder on the hard drive before it can be executed. The AV
package will scan the attachment during this save process and nail anything
bad long before the execution process starts. As such, there's really no
need to scan incoming email.

Thanks Gary,

I use already HotMail but if you buy something that doesnt work and that
should be repaired or get your (partly) money back. And I wont get my money
back and I expected here a repair solution. Not a work around.
By the way, I have installed Office now and with it came Outlook, so I use
that instead. I know its an work around too and it still irritates me.

But thank you again for the reply.

I'm sure Outlook will do the job for you.
Sometimes you just have to cut your losses and decide that
something isn't worth repairing.
