Microsoft does not send emails with security attachments. These are bogus
emails created to look as if they've originated from MS. The antivirus
protection and filters that your ISP uses at the mail server level probably
stripped the virus attachment. No need to have that traffic clogging the
email servers.

If your ISP's protections missed the attachment, it's possible that the
email protection portion of your antivirus program stripped the attachment.
Either way - you *really* did not want that attachment.

To update Windows, visit the Windows Update site. Start> Programs> Windows
Update or use the update link in the Help and Support file.

Kevin,

As Sharon said, Microsoft *NEVER* distributes software via email. The mail which you received is not from Microsoft, though the return address says so. See, 'Virus attachment claims to contain software updates from Microsoft'

I am having a similar problem with any email with an attachment. Email
without an attachment opens ok. According to Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article - 825803 this is due to the April, 2003, Cumulative Patch for
Outlook Express being installed. To work around this behavior, the article
says to find the .EML file & rename to .MHT file but I can't find the .EML
file. Appreciate any help.

If your problem is the one stated in that article, it is not similar to the
situation regarding the attachment setting. For attachments in OE, open an
OE window. Click on Tools> Options. Click the Security tab and change the
setting on that page to allow attachments.

Be very careful when changing this setting. Today's email worms are very
aggressive. It's very likely that an email and attachment that appears to
be from a friend is actually from an infected machine - one that had your
friend's email in its address book. Save only attachments that you think
are legit and scan them with your antivirus program before using them.

In regards to MSKB 835803, drag an email message from Outlook Express and
drop it on the desktop. The results will be an *.eml file. From there you
can experiment with the rest of the steps outlined in the referenced
article.
