Lately, people are reporting to me that an attachment to an e-mail I send
them is NOT attached when they receive it. Nothing strange about 'em ...
small PDF or JPG files, usually. Often, I'll attach the file to another
e-mail and send to the same address, and it'll work the second time. Anybody
have a clue what might be causing this? I'm using XP Pro, SP1 (still) ...
and OE 6.

Thanks!

Hi Bill :-)

This is just a thought, I don't have an exact answer, and there could be a
number of causes, but, it is possible that their AV, or even their ISP AV
program, is removing or blocking the attachments on the other end. It could
also be they are doing it in their own set up and not aware of it. If they
are using OE, have them check the setting Tools>Options>Security>see if "Do
not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a
virus" is Unchecked. Not sure that would block them though, but, it's worth
a check. A while back I had Cox as my ISP, and they have a program in place
that automatically removes any attachment their program "thinks" might be a
virus. The subscriber has no options one way or the other to accept or not.
They once advised subscribers when they had removed an attachment, but,
stopped that early last year so. They stripped some attachments sent to me
from people I knew were sending them, and they even blocked e-mails without
attachments, and I had a heck of a time getting them to unblock the senders
and put them in the OK list. If I'm not mistaken, there are a few other
ISP's who are doing the same or similar thing. So, the folks just not be
getting them on their end. Have them contact their ISP and tell them what
is happening and if they are using some blocking or removal program. Also,
have them ask what kind of attachments you might send that won't cause the
problem.

Also, there are some types of 3rd party programs, such as MailWasher and the
like, than can also control what gets through. Not sure if they strip the
attachment or not, but, they might check.

Hope this helps :-)

Jan :)
