Why is it when I go to attach a file to my email sometimes
it is embedded in my email and other times it is in a
separate window on the bottom of my page?

Is this soley the difference between rich text and html?
And if so, is there a difference if I use rich text or
html?

This is the Rich Text HTML thing indeed. HTML is more compatible than Rich
Text with clients other than Microsoft Office Outlook.

Julia,

Rich Text formatted messages will insert the attachment into the body of
the message. HTML and Plain Text formatted messages will insert the
attachment below the Subject: line.

Some mail servers are unable to properly handle Rich Text messages and your
recipient may receive a Plain Text message with a winmail.dat attachment
instead of the Rich Text message you sent. If this issue occurs, set your
mail format to HTML and Plain Text and compose a new message to send to
that recipient. This is not an issue for you, but for the recipient you are
sending to. They just aren't capable of receiving a Rich Text formatted
message (.rtf).

Take care,

James Hawkins
