Attaching a shortcut to an email

How can I attach a SHORTCUT to an Outlook message in
Outlook 2002?

I have tried creating the shortcut, and attacting it in
the usual way, but it attaches the entire document, which
causes two problems - firstly it takes up far more room in
the mail store, and secondly, people update locally held
copies of the document instead of using the shortcut to
access a shared version of the document.

Thanks

Gill

When you're in the Insert File dialog box, if you click on the file and then
click the arrow next to the Insert button you should get an option to Insert
as Hyperlink. Use that and a link to the file will be created -- the users
will be able to open the file from the link. Be careful if you're using
mapped network drives, though -- you might have to use the //server/drive
format instead of the drive letter you are using.

Whoops -- I goofed on this one. It doesn't work this way in e-mail
messages -- I was thinking about putting shortcuts in appointments, tasks
and other items, not in mail. To put the shortcut into a mail message, use
the following format:

file://\\server\share\folder\file.exe

If your file path contains spaces, you'll need to enclose the link text in
angle brackets -- like this: <link>
