Attach to another email

Often when I receive an email from someone, it will attach itself under one
that either came from that person months earlier, or occasionally to one
that has no relationship to the first. This causes problems, because I don't
know a reply has come in. Similarly, when I move an email to a saved file
of a client, it will attach itself to another one from months earlier. It
gets hidden there.
Any thoughts on how to prevent this?

Assuming Outlook Express: View > Current view > Group messages by
conversation (uncheck).
