ATI cards work perfectly fine with XP although I'm a fan of NVidia myself.
Depending on how an option is set on the system, either unsigned drivers are
being blocked or you're receiving a warning message and don't know that you
can ignore it. First, start by going into the system control panel applet
(winkey-pause or right click my computer and select properties or go into
control panel and select system). Go to the hardware tab and hit the driver
signing button. Select the option to warn. Once that's set you can install
any driver as long as you understand the consequences.
