ATI TV Wonder PCI

HI,

I recently had someone give me their "old" ATI TV Wonder PCI card.

I just pulled down the latest 9.1.0 DAO/MDAC, 9.02 MMC (Media Center)
and 1.11 PCI Drivers off of ATI's site. I also have the latest
DirectX 9.0b, and WIndows Media encoder 9 on the system.

When I go ahead and install everything in the order that the web site
describes and then go to run the TV view after the reboot, the
ATIMMC.exe crashes and I'm SOL.

I do have an NVidia MX-440 card in the system (given this is a media
PC), but could that be causing any issues? I have another system with
a 9700 Pro w/128Mb in another system but that one doesn't have the
hard drive space in it like this one does. Also that one has more HP
and is more a play/gaming system so having the TV card in it wouldn't
really benefit what I'm planning to do with it.

Any suggestions? I've already done the uninstall/reinstall approach
to no avail and all the devices have drivers properly loaded.

IS there other software I could use to watch the TV piece of things if
this is going to continue to crash?

I wish I had people give me old TV Wonders! What error is displayed when you
attempt to run the MMC TV Player? If it doesn't give one, what error is
found in the event log (under control panel/administrative tools - using
classic control panel view)? If you've followed ATIs comprehensive
instruction procedure to the letter and it still doesn't work, this may give
some clues as to what's going on. The fact you have the "competitions"
graphics card in there won't be contributing to the problem. Its still new
enough to support the features the TV Wonder needs. I hope when you
performed the install nothing else was running at the time (e.g. antivirus
programs etc (even in the background) - this can sometimes have a
detrimental effect. FYI DirectX 9.0c is now out - in case you want to
update.

I think those cards just suck myself...I used to have an Nvidia card and it
would error out like crazy, now I got a 9700 pro and clean reinstall of
windows and it still crashes if I try to use the card as my webcam in msn
messenger. GRRRR.

Are there any decent PCI 2.0 cards out there? I really just want a good way
of getting stuff from my camcorder into the computer (its not digital) and
hopefully use it with msn messenger. I used to be able to do that a long
time ago with some older drivers on windows 98.

I put 9.0c on before I actually posted that message... as for the
Event Viewer info - it's giving it as an APp Error ID 1000 - "Faulting
application atimmc.exe, version 9.2.0.3, faulting module common.dll,
version 9.2.0.5, fault address 0x00010677. For more info... blah blah
blah M$ stuff with URLs"

Any ideas on the common.dll -- and AFAIK I disabled anti-virus and
shtudown everything else just incase there was conflicts. I'm
definitely far from a beginner with any of this -- sans video capture
cards. I do DV editing via. firewire so this is new for me and I
figured I would give it a shot for pulling in Videos from VCR instead
of rerouting it through my DV cam which is poor quality sometimes...
 
I have the same card, and have been very pleased with this little viewer:

If your device manager shows no problems, then this should work. A bonus
is that that the image is much better than ATI MMC. Image capture is
beta, however. Freeware.

For my image captures, I use Power VCR II:

Works very well. Not freeware, but good.

NeoDVD came with a USB capture card I bought from Avermedia, it does a
good job as well:

Anyway, lots of options out there besides the MMC.
