ATI Sucks on Linux

Does anyone know how to install ati drivers on Mandrake 2005 Le Linux. Ati
sucks, they don't even have the instructions on their website any more.
Anyway doing the old way does not work for this distribution

it used to suck.
if you have problems installing these drivers, then you should RTFM.
2-3 generations before these drivers, it was a pain in the ass to install
the drivers, patching the kernel, updates and all that...
now, with the new drivers, just make sure you meet all the requirements for
the drivers and follow the instructions.
it worked for me under Mandrake 10, Fedora 3, suse, centos, whitebox and
mor, both under 2.4 and 2.6
here is a link for you, enjoy:

I think you mean that Linux sucks...

I think he means that ati's support for Linux sucks (it used to), but he
also has no clue how to click on 4 links to reach the Linux driver section
and instructions on ati's website....oh wait, not 4, just click on drivers
and software and you are there.
also, just to let you know, I got ut2004 running in no time, no hassle, just
15-20 fps under windows xp performance before any tweaks and updates.

I found what might seems a solution to my ati driver install probelm. The
link below explains the problem.
The reason I am saying ATI sucks is it's 4 clicks to find the driver, but
there is no instruction what so ever on how to install it anymore on their
website. Worse yet I found the kernel needs to be patched with these
patches. Guess what, not instruction on how to patch the kernel using the
patches in this format.
So I have the drivers, I have the patches to the kernel. NO instructions on
what to do with them. Not being an IT pro, goggle doesn't even provide the
solution. That's why ATI sucks. Both my Nvidia cards have smooth linux
drivers and with easy install { after installing kernel source} and
INSTRUCTIONS on how to apply them.
If you know where the instructions for both patching and installing are,
please kindly let me know. Otherwise ATI are great cards, but I run only
linux, and yes for 3d graphics design I use the 3d feature. Thank you.

Why are Nvidia drivers so easy to install on linux then and have step by
step instructions? That's what I'm getting at.

why do u waste your time with Linux at all? - if TIME is of any value to u
better go Windows.
I threw Linux, after just 2 weeks, in the bin even I paid for it.

Not really, (I grew up with Unix) but I had work to do instead of finding
out how to get a working printer driver for my old Epson Stylus Colour and
how to make my old Epson scanner work with Linux. The printer driver was
included in Mandrake but the print speed was one line per second..makes
around a minute to feed even a blank page through (impressive!). That driver
was obviously too basic to handle a VT or FF command. The scanner was
impossible to install since the device was unknown - Epson had no drivers! A
admittedly faulty kernel update/release then destroyed my HD partition. The
Linux "help" forums where full of smart bunnies but no solutions. I gave up
on all this sh*t since I had work to do.

I got enough of all this...and returned to Windows (what a relief)

dude, these new drivers from ati, you dont need to patch the kernel
anymore. just install them.
with mandrake 10 i guess you are using xorg. they worked just fine and
from the 1st try on my feodra box.

google gave me that in 1 sec, just search ati +linux or ati +linux +how to
They do on Fedora but Mandrake seems to have uninstalled the patches from
the download edition.

I have a Stylus color inkjet and a scsi scanner and both are autodetected
and work fine with great quality and speed on new Mandrake. Linux has come
a long way in the last couple of years.

there are no patches required for 2.6
for 2.4 yes, but not for 2.6.
btw, I never liked mandrake, too many problems with it.
redhat or suse (suse has proprietary built in ati drivers that work better
than what ati provides).

PS: Steve, try a fedora distribution and compare to mandrake, you will be
surprised. And to compare an open source os with a commercial one,
financially well supported, blah, no comment here(ati tv tuner, VE Wonder,
pci, took me 15 minutes of installing, 10 minutes of downloading at
350kb/sec and 3 reboots to install the device. It took Fedora 15 seconds
under Kudzu, no reboots, and surprise, a better quality than windows xp.
tested and true). If everything else works good for you under Linux, you are
better off buying a newer printer, a brand name one than to spend at least
$150 for windows xp. otherwise, you are using copyrighted software, right?
there are always 2 sides of a coin.

Well, my Mandrake sidestep is ~3 years ago - I think it was version 8 (? or
so)
I too did not like the application user interface inconsistencies - every
pgm had a different colour scheme and buttons. Once Linux has reached true
Windows comfort, especially concerning driver installations and updates I am
willing to reconsider.

I used version 8.2 and it sucked, interface was less consitent and far less
stable. 2005 Le is a world of difference.
