ATI releases Vista testing tool

Remember that stupid Video XL-R8R utility produced by Futuremark/MadOnion a
while back? It was meant to analyze a user's system configuration and make
"intelligent" upgrade recommendations. About as trustworthy as Aryan
propaganda.

Actually, it's still downloadable:

People need to understand that if they are running XP, then it's almost
certain that they can run Vista as long as they have 512MB or more of
system memory (note, if you have chipset video with shared memory:
System memory = Total memory - Video memory). The issue, as far as
video cards is concerned, is that only medium range and higher video
cards will be able to run Vista's "Aero" eye-candy interface. But Aero
is optional, Vista will run just fine without Aero, although the "cool
factor" will be a lot lower.

For many people the advice is "buy an X1900 XTX".

I wonder what the same tool will advise next year.

Why would it do that when Vista would work better with a DX10 card?

X1900 will be obsolete with all dx9 cards once Vista hits the streets.

That makes no sense for them to tell us that since for what a 1900 costs you
could just go out and buy a DX 10 card as they will be out around the same
time Vista is.

"Aryan propaganda"

So non-Aryan propaganda is more trustworthy then?

How do you come to this conclusion?

So because I'm white, I can't be trusted. Hmmmm. You must be a liberal.

You seem to equate "Aryan" with "white". Those two terms are not
interchangeable. "Aryan" was popularized by Adolf Hitler to elevate ethnic
Germans from the Semitic peoples.

Well than this Caucasoid stands corrected.

Here's a nickel. Now go away.

"Give to the Caucasoid College Fund! Because a mind is a terrible thing to
waste."

Correct...the entire thing is meaningless as it still does not take into
account DX10 which will require new cards, so what is the point of the test
as far as video cards go? we all probably have above min req in other areas.

Its DX10 simple as that and no card is out yet so save the $$$

Microsoft's Vista Upgrade Advisor says my PCI-E X800 GTO w/256MB - purchased
in late March - only requires proper drivers after Vista has been installed,
"available at Windows Update".

ATI's 'advisor' says that the X800 GTO passes on 'Minimum' and 'Recommended'
requirements, but not on the 'Optimal'. It seems that the Vertex Shader and
Pixel Shader are version 2.0, and require 3.0 of each shader. Is this a
chipset item or something to do with running the Omega 3.8.273 drivers?

And yes the One-X1800-fits-all recommendation is dubious at best. Tsk!
Since ATI is getting out of the TV card market, how can they comply with the
TV-ala-Net-in-the-house features of Vista?

Answer: Wait and See. Prices fall in March and December, and so one can
wait for a supportable card that handles the 'optimal' if one already
satisfies the Min and Recommended requirements. No way I'll pay over 200
pounds or dollars on a graphics card, unless I was creating content for
high-end graphics and games. Pah!
