Since my initial install of Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade Academic
Edition. I've had a few graphical problems which I'll list.

1. All Windows Vista games (Solitaire, Freecell, Minesweeper, etc) crash the
moment I load them.
2. When I open an image and choose to start the Slide Show through the
Windows Picture Gallery, Explorer.exe crashes.
3. When an application is started and requires the UAC, the screen flickers
off, and back on and prompts for the allow or deny dialog. Then it flickers
back off and on once an option is selected.
4. The Windows Aero option is not available in the Colour Scheme.

These are the only issues I've come accross so far and I'm not entirely
certain what is causing them. I've spoken to a Microsoft technician and he
tells me it's because my graphic drivers arent fully operational yet. However
I've run the Microsoft Windows Vista upgrade advisory utility and it states
my graphic card will run the Windows Aero desktop. Also, the following link...

http://whql.microsoft.com/HCL/Produ...03&sv=&f=64p&pn=ATI Radeon X800 Series&oid=19
States the availabiliy of drivers for my card.

I've installed the drivers through Windows Update and also the latest 7.1
catalyst drivers from ATI but no avail.

Other PC specs are as follows...

MB: ASUS A8V-E DELUXE
CPU: AMD 64 Athlon 3500+
RAM: 1GB Giel DDR400
GFX: ATI Radeon X800GT
HDD: Seagate 160GB IDE SATA
SFX: Creative Audigy
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium - Base Score 4.2

I've also tried to force the Aero desktop by changing the registry values
of...

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\Composition set to 1
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\CompositionPolicy set to 2

Then restarting the Desktop Windows Manager.

If anybody has any ideas, please let me know.

Christopher van Dal.

Hi,

If you get a 4.2 base score it should works fine. Please check these things:
1. Display settings: Colors set to 32bit.
2. Window Color and Appearance: Enable transparency is Enabled (Checked)

If this does not work, go to Control Panel\System and
Maintenance\Performance Information and Tools, click Advanced tools -> View
performance details in Event log to see what is going on.

Good luck

To zwz,

I am running colours at 32bit and the option of enabling transparency in the
Window Colour and Appearance dialog is not available. I checked my
performance logs and don't see anything out of the ordinary.

Does your MOBO also support DDR2 memory. there have been reports of non aero
support with DDR@ MOBOS using only 1 Dimm instead of a pair of DDR2 Dimms.
I don't know if the issues applies if the solution also applies to using 1
DDR dimm on a MOBO that supports DDR2.

I don't know what's happened to change it's mind, but it seems the aero theme
loads now on start-up. I can tell this because the task bar is transparent.
However, when I open any window, anything at all, the screen flickers and the
task bar returns back to it's Vista Basic flat black.

Games still crash and so does the Slide Show viewer.

Any ideas?

Crappy drivers. The only way I can get aero to run is use RC1 drivers, ver
8.29. I even tried the latest ones from AMD 7.2. These are absolute junk and
cause Windows games to crash. They mirror your problem, aero at start up and
start menu, select any app or open a window and aero crashes with no option
to enable it - Vista Basic only. So much for certified drivers.

Aero has not worked on my machine since RC1. All drivers since then have
caused aero to fail. Obviously delivering unified drivers for all models has
resulted in the X800 failing. Hope AMD gets off it's backside and fixes this
problem soon.

Go to the AMD site and leave feedback to the Catalyst crew and tell them of
the problem and that you are not happy. Also get up MS as they delivered
Vista with so called certified drivers. Certified by ??, obviously didn't
test them on a X800.

I too have an ATI Radeon X800 video card. I believe when I first installed
Windows Vista Ultimate I did have Aero but now do not; Windows Vista Basic
is all that is available for selection.

Did you finally get a resolution?

My config:

HP m7860n Dual-core 6400 with 2GByte memory.
PCI Express ATI X800 (256ddr2 memory) video card.
