after getting windows xp pro installed when it comes to
the welcome screen it crash my computer and says there was
a video problem. after rebooting i am able to get the
newest video drivers installed and all is well. however i
have to do this before installing the intel chip drivers.
the question i have is, can i force the install to load
just generic VGA video until i can get the chipset drivers
installed and then the video drivers?
thanks
richard

Richard, restart and tap F8 constantly until you get a Menu. From there
you can select VGA Mode.

I had an identical problem with my ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder. I believe the
problem is that the Radeon requires DirectX 9 and WinXP SP1 to run
correctly. The basic initial install of XP Pro doesn't have that, so you
crash. The workaround I used was to reboot into Safe mode with networking,
which uses a basic VGA mode that the Radeon is comfortable with. Then I
navigated to Windows Update, downloaded DirectX 9 as my very first download,
then Windows XP SP1 as the second. Each time you reboot, you have to get
back into Safe mode with networking. Once you have downloaded all the
critical updates, you can download the current drivers from the ATI site (if
you don't already have them on that computer) and run the catalyst exe file
from Normal mode (not Safe). I wasn't sure exactly which Windows Update
files I needed, so I just stayed in Safe mode until I had downloaded ALL the
critical updates and the DirectX 9 update. Hope that helps. (What a
pain--makes me wish for another video card)
