I am having trouble with my video card drivers, after downloading and
installing the computer becomes unstable, often after displaying a blue
screen and restarting. I have tried several times to install and uninstall
and it just doesn't work. I must be doing something wrong. Any help would
be appreciated. I have Vista Ultimate and an ATI X800 XL video card.

I have a x1300 pro which ran very stable on the drivers out of the Vista
original install. I later got an update from Windows update and have still
never had anything that seemed related to a Video driver. Did you install
something you downloaded from ATI? If so, try uninstalling and revert back
to the ones from MS.

I don't think it's a bad test. But if one is gaming with that card, then you
really don't want to use the Microsoft drivers. I haven't checked the latest
revs, but previous versions didn't offer OpenGL support. Plus my expeience
with the Microsoft drivers are they run way slower than the official
drivers. I scored a 4091 in 3Dmark06 using the WDDM drivers and 6028 with
the official ATI drivers, that's quite a performance loss.

I only use the ATI supplied drivers, so if you're getting a BSOD when
instlaling them, you probably have a problem somewhere else, like anti-virus
conflicting.

I believe the "most correct" way to install video drivers is to boot up
under Safe mode (hit the F8 key at the selection menu) and install the
drivers from there. I'm guessing you might have a program or two, that is
starting up with windows that is casuing the conflict. Safe mode should keep
thosekind of programs from loading and conflicting.
