I've been using a Matrox G450, but I replaced it with
the ATI 9000 because I'm a gamer, and newer games
simply would not run on the Matrox. I had been running
RTCW ( Wolfenstein ) on the Matrox just fine. Now
my new games . MOHAA ... run fine, but RTCW is
very dark. In the game options, I try to turn up the
brightness, but there is no response. I have no problem
with that in MOHAA. What is going on there? I realize
that RTCW is a little bit dated. But it seems weird
that now it is so dark.

RTCW is a Quake3 engine game. I did a search for "Quake3 dark" and found:
Type the following command at the console:

/r_ignorehwgamma 1
/vid_restart
and see if it helps.

You can also try the following:

/r_ignorehwgamma 0
/r_overbrightbits 0
/vid_restart
This should mean that the brightness slider works as usual.

If that doesn't help, try typing the following commands at the console:

/r_mapoverbrightbits x
/vid_restart
where x is a value from 2 to 3.

If any of these commands work, you can make them perment by using the seta
command at console (~ key). Like /seta r_overbrightbits 1.

/r_mapoverbrightbits x
/vid_restart
where x is a value from 2 to 3.

I reinstalled RTCW, and it adapted itself to the ATI card better.
However, it was still quite dark. I tried the above setting, and
that helped a lot. I think I brought the game back about 75%
of what it should be. What I see now is a very high contrast
screen. That is pretty good, except the areas like dark hallways
are still too dark to play the game very well. I think the Lady
Krauts would smoke me every chance they got. Is there a
console command that reduces the high contrast ?
