I agree. I'm thoroughly frackin pist.

No way I'm buying a mobo to replace my Asus A8V Deluxe (a damn good piece of
hardware), just so that I have a different (not necessarily better at this
point) graphics interface that just so happens to be the only interface that
the video card I want to upgrade to supports.

Sometimes change is a bad thing.... AGP 8X is not antiquated damnit!

Now if only I can stick to my guns and resist the temptation to upgrade to a
post 6800U/x850xt gen vid card.

......................frustrated.

I do hope they will have SOMETHING in the new Shadermodel 3.0 line that
is AGP and faster than my current 9800 XT. When ATI actually releases
something I'll be back here asking for advice on that.

Assuming there will be something to meet those two requirements, the
only loser here will be ATI. I would have dropped $600 on their
top-of-the-line card without thinking about it if they had released an
AGP version (just like I was one of the first owners of the 9800 XT).

Now if sales of their new X1800 suck, we won't know if it's nVida's
competition or ATI's own stupidity to blame...

The X1600 XT should be considerably faster than your 9800XT and will
have SM 3.0, HDMI, HDCP ....support.
And it will be released on AGP.

From what I have discovered here at Yongsan Electronics Market in
Seoul Korea, the shopping mecca for hardware, top end video cards in
AGP are about $100 more than their PCI-e counterpart. So the
advantages in sticking to AGP may be moot. On the other hand, if your
running legacy hardware (ie. Athlon XP 1800 - 3200) you probably won't
be able to take full advantage of the x1600 let alone the x1800.

Excellent! I have jotted that number down and will be awaiting release.

Thanks very much!

Great for the economy. Promotes the sale of new motherboards
and related components.

Correction:-

Great for the Taiwanese economy.
^^^^^^^^

Helps them survive their regular typhoons... Cat4 Typhoon Longwang
is about to strike right now. Seems as if the Eastern-Asia folk are
much better prepared for these rather regular events than the US.
Maybe something can be learned by the US from them about living in
natural-disaster-prone areas (Taiwan and Japan both experience
regular typhoons and severe earthquakes) and preparing for such
events in terms of building codes/locations and disaster-plans ?

New Orleans is a special case--built on a flood plain below both river and
sea level. No way around it except massive landfills or moving the city
and neither of those is going to happen. On the other hand IMO the
Mississippi levees should _not_ be rebuilt--if the river floods every year
people will get the idea that maybe this is not the best place to build.
