Hi guys,
After owning nothing but GF's from 1thru 4 I'm now the owner of a radeon
9700 pro.
I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to give some basic *safe*
overclocking numbers to start off with. Like, how much should I move each
slider at a time? And how much would the average overclock be?
Just learning atispeak now.
TIA

I do about 10MHz, at a time. The memory clock is doubled (halved in what
you are seeing displayed). So, keep in mind that for every 1MHz you are
increasing memory clock, you are increasing total memory clock by 2MHz.
It's usually a good idea to just keep the core and memory synched. As to
what your card will do, you'll just have to find that out :) You didn't
mention mfg. or on-card memory brand. Those weigh, heavily, on OC success
or failure.

Well, mines went straight to 9800 pro speeds with no qualms, Hercules 9700
pro, probably go more too but not tried, fast enough on default for me :)

I don't know who the maker is because the card has been modded with a copper
cooler and shiny ramsinks. I strongly suspect it's MSI as the board is red
like my old gf4 4200.
The ramsinks look like they have been concreted on. :o(

Don't bother removing the ramsinks. They will help you, either way. As for
the PCB, most mfg's are using the red. So, it's a crapshoot. You might
wanna look at the PCB stickers and any imprinting (usually, in gold) for
version/part numbers.

Anyway, 10MHz/step is usually a safe method. You will find out, fairly
quickly, just what your card is limited at.

Could it hurt my ati radeon 9000 pro if I stared using that kind of OC
technique?

Possibly. I don't take that sort of advice at face value.

I'd start by looking at the memory, if it is 2.8ns then it is rated to
~350MHz, 3.3ns to ~300MHz

(as frequency is 1/period).

Another good place to look is the data sheet of the manufacturer of the ram
chips.

I'd feel happy sticking it straight to the maximum rating. Then going
slowly from there.

As with all overclocking - it's usually safest to hit the barrier slowly - a
thorough test that highlights the occasional problem is generally better
than a card that doesn't initialise.

I recommend this site for drivers, tweaks, and his driver set comes with an
overclock program, artifact tester (to see if you o/c'd too much).. and other
handy utilities. I'm able to overclock my 9700 PRO to the same specs as the
9800. 378/330.75 and thats with the STOCK fan!! You sound like you have modded
card that should run even higher then. Have no worries.

Raise the core 10 mhz a time (or one notch up) first. Once that has topped out..
THEN start to raise the memory one.

Thanks for the info all. I've already been and got the omega drivers but I
can't do anything cause when they are installed it kills my usb. So I have
to uninstall them and then let windows install the drivers when it reboots.
