ATI files

For the second time this Spyware has identified some ATI
files as Spyware. Without thinking I removed these files
and have created a problem with my MultiMediaCenter that
I have been unable to get fixed even with a re install.
Last night, once again Spyware has identified another 7
or 8 files as Spyware and again has identified these as
Spyware. Is Microsoft not familiar with ATI graphics
cards and software? If this continues I will have to
once again remove this Spyware from my computer. I need
an explanation from Microsoft and advice as what I should
do if this continues. My Acronis Privacy Expert software
does not identify these same files as Spyware. Microsoft
please respond.

Microsoft AntiSpyware is not a supported product of Microsoft.

Microsoft AntiSpyware is currently in beta-test trials. It is expected that
beta-test trialists will find and identify shortcomings in the product, and
should be able to cope with them, either on their own account, or by sharing
their problems and solutions with other beta-test trialists. If a user is
unable to cope with the demands of beta-test trials, then the appropriate
thing to do is to uninstall the product.

Microsoft AntiSpyware does not delete anything without the user's consent.
It is to be expected during a beta-test trial that the user should exercise
due judgment before agreeing to any file deletion proposed by the
application. Trialists should not simply allow the application to perform
all the deletions it suggests. Users should always be conscious of the
possibility of false positives.

About MultiMedia Center

Potential issue with Windows Media Center Extender

There is an incompatibility between Windows AntiSpyware
and Windows Media Center Extender. If you install Windows
AntiSpyware on a computer running Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2005, Windows Media Center Extender cannot
establish a remote connection. If you want to connect to a
Windows Media Center Edition 2005-based computer by using
Windows Media Center Extender, uninstall Windows
AntiSpyware. For more information, see the KB article at
support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;892374

Advice
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware and send a suspected spyware
report from the Tools Menu.

Yo John:

Bummer, dude.

What ATI card are we talking abt? I've got a 9550 and
have never had any problems at all with MSAS.

Maybe try a complete un-install and then re-install.
Have you downloaded the latest ATI updates from Technet?

Let us know,

I am talking about the ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 Pro. I have
done an un install and a re install and it didn't work. I
am waiting help from ATI. I am using the lastest update
from ATI.

Hi John:

Well it seems that you've done what you could to fix
whatever is going on. The post from Anon seems to
indicate an issue with WMC Extender and MSAS, but what
remote connecting has to do with a conflict with the ATI
files and MSAS is beyond me. Did you check the link that
was referenced and did it apply?

I do know that in the last 6 months there have not been
any similar complaints regarding any ATIs and MSAS. The
one post I did find was related to the ATI launchpad.exe
but it was still working okay.

If you do hear back from ATI, please let the rest of us
know...Might just save someone else from having a problem.

Tks,

RobbieA

You appear to be experiencing a false positive with the
current versions of ATI Catalyst drivers. This was
introduced with definition versions 5743 last week.

New definitions, 5745, came out late last night.

I don't know whether this false positive is resolved in
these newer definitions--I'd be pleased to hear back from
anyone affected whether this still shows up with the
newer definitions.

Typo in the address line! Should read:

(I plead horrible HTML interface, and not being too wide awake yet--sent
part of the family off on a plane at 3:30 AM this morning.)

I have tried to send a suspected spyware report form to
Microsoft about my problem about 6 times and continue to
get nothing but an error message.

Thanks for making those attempts. In my experience, if this reporting fails
instantly, it is probably a bug at work, and it isn't going to change.

This bug has been reproduced by Microsoft, but I don't expect to see it
fixed before beta2.

I downloaded the new definitions and did not have a
problem. However, I had previously instructed the
software to Ignore Always the previous Spyware finding so
I don't know it didn't find them because of my selection
or because of the newer definitions. Now that I have
gotten past this I still need a solution to my problem
with the MMC PC Check option on my ATI software caused by
removing the so called infected files a couple of days
ago. The lesson to be learned to others is if in doubt
as to whether this software has found a real Spyware or
not, do not remove it unless you are certain because all
I have accomplished is to create a problem I am curretnly
unable to fix.

The "always ignore" list can be found here, in Microsoft Antispyware.

Options, Settings, choose Spyware Scan in the left column.

You can remove items set as always ignore via checkboxes in the right pane.

I'm not familiar at all with the ATI software or its various parts and
options.

Your message mentions uninstalling and reinstalling--was that in relation to
the ATI software?

For XP, it would appear to me that the latest bits are found here:

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=293

and of course, ATI should be the best source of support.

I'm sorry you had this experience. Other messages have suggested that false
positives may relate to the beta nature of the product. I'm less inclined
to blame the beta product than the state of the art in this industry as a
whole. Both antispyware and antivirus products are susceptable to false
positives. We see far fewer of them from antivirus apps, I think, partly
because there is a high degree of industry cooperation and information
sharing among the antivirus vendors. This is far less true in the
antispyware area. I certainly agree with you that looking closely at the
detections, and, if in doubt, choosing quarantine or ignore, rather than
remove--is a wise course.

ATI is aware of this problem and know that it was caused
by some bad definitions from MS, but advise that the
updated definitions has fixed the problem. They had no
solution to restore the MMC PC Check to normal and told
me to just ignore the error message.

I am surprised that you are not familiar with ATI. Is is
one of the leading graphics card and far superior to
anything that NVIDA has to offer.

The machine I'm writing from has an ATI all-in-wonder 4 meg PCI graphics
card, and my laptop has an ATI radeon 9000 chipset. I'm familiar with ATI,
but not with the chips that use the Catalyst drivers. As you can see my
desktop video is really ancient, and the laptop also doesn't use the
Catalyst drivers.
