Hi all,

I am a newbie when it comes to ATI cards. I am a convert from nvidia. I
recently got a Dell Dimension XPS with a 9800XT card. How can I tell if the
drivers are actual ATI drivers or drivers that ATI supplies to Microsoft for
WinXP? Can I remove these drivers but just going through add/remove
software in the control panel and then installing 4.3 catalyst?

I would think it would be ATI drivers since 9800 cards came out in '03.

The drivers that come load on the Dell will be older (MS certified) ATI
drivers.
Just install the newest drivers (4.3) over whatever is now loaded.
If you uninstall the older version first, the DVD player drivers may
not reinstall without an ATI CD.

When I tried updating after uninstalling the old drivers
the update would not complete the install for the DVD player
unless I could show proof that I had an driver CD.
Which I still can not find.

They are a Dell modified ATI Driver, go to Dell's website/Forums
(http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums) under "Dimension" then "Video"
and read the "Video FAQ's"(direct link below). It appears that originally
Dell disabled the Overdrive Feature of the Radeon 9800XT's but has since
issued a patch to rectifiy (Both in the BIOS and Driver level I believe).
Check to see if you require the patch, if you do install it. I myself also
have a Dell XPS Gen 2 with a 9800Pro and I use ATI's drivers with no
problems.
