I have just installed a replacement graphics card - an ATI X700. The card
works poorly with the standard VGA driver however when I install the ATI
driver the screen blanks out completely. I can remove the driver by starting
XP in safe mode but that leaves me with poor performing graphics. The ATI
site is of no use, has nayone had this problem and found a solution?

thanks

Are you trying to install the correct driver for your card?.. is it a new
card?.. if it is, do the drivers on the CD not work?.. have you visited the
ATI site for the latest drivers?..

Yes, I have tried the ATI site for the latest driver and get the same
problem. I have also carried carried out all the XP updates but with no luck.

There should have been a CD in the box with the video card. Drivers are on
the CD - did you not try them?

Yes, I've tried the driver from the CD and ATI's site - they both cause the
screen to go blank immediately after installation (I believe the PC is still
running in the background although I can't tell for sure because there is
nothing on the monitor!).

I have tried the drivers both with and without the associated catalyst
software.

You've got the right PCI-E slot, yes? Does this card need to be
connected to the power supply? If it does, did you do this? Is your
power supply beefy enough to handle the card? If you are unsure, swap
out the psu for a more powerful one and see if that helps.

Otherwise, you may have just gotten a bad card and you should take it
back to the vendor.

ATI drivers/user interface only work correctly if you install the .NET
framework.

Sounds like your monitor can't handle whatever the card defaults to. Try
another monitor.

The very first thing that has to be done to successfully install the ATI
drivers is to remove ALL remnants of the previous drivers.

1. go to control panel - add remove programs and remove the previous
drivers. This will normally fix your problem

2. If you still have difficulty-you will have to do a registry search
using a key work e.g. Nvidia. You will need to back up your registry
first do the search and each time a reference is returned deleat it.

3. If you install Catalyst you will have to install net.passport from
the MS web site. There is an older version of catalyst on the ATI web
site, that does not require the net passport this is what I use, it
works much better at least that's what I think. You will still be able
to up grade drivers latter on, but just download drivers only and not
the new catalyst program

Hope this helps

That's only if you are using the version of the drivers with the Catalyst
Control Panel....

Did you uninstall the drivers from the old video card?
Did you delete the old video card from device manager?

Seems "Tom's Hardware Site" had a lot of grief setting up and testing
this particular card too! On the other hand is it possible the setup is
switching to the other VIdeo output and leaving your monitor high and
dry, or maybe switching to an unsupported range?

.NET has something to do with video drivers? If so, what?

They don't. You only have to install the .net framework if you want
to run the catalyst control panel. To just install the drivers you do
not need .net.

I don't know which ATI X700 card you're using. I have the X700 PRO AGP and
use it to support a two monitor configuration. I don't use the full package
drivers, choosing to skip the Catalyst Control Center. Even though I have
the required .NET Framework installed for the control center to run
properly, I've never found much use for it. It also tosses occasional
errors that I would rather not see. Instead I install the smaller package
with just the drivers/ATI control panel.

What is the catalyst control panel and what is it used for?

Alias

It is a ATI produced graphical control panel that allows the user to make
all kinds of changes to the way that their video card works..

Does one have to download .NET 1.1 before .NET 2.0?

Thanks,

Sharon,

I have the X700 AGP. I have tried installing both the full package and just
the minimal drivers. I have the .NET framework installed - I have completly
re-installed XP including a hard disk format and I have carried out all the
updates from the microsoft update site.

John

Bobby,

Yes I have removed all traces of previous drivers, first using the various
software removal tools and then I completely re-installed XP including a hard
disk format. I then carried out all the updates from the microsoft update
site.
