ATI completely rewriting OGL driver

WE'VE HEARD twice times now that ATI wants to try to improve its Open GL
performance. it is aware of the fact that Nvidia rules the Open GL market
especially the most significant part of this market, workstations.
ATI knows it has to do something about its Fire GL drivers and that Nvidia
is way ahead. It made a drastic and extremely unpopular move when it shut
its Fire GL office and decided to relocate this operation back to North
America. All for profit and margins.

It claimed then that it wanted its software and hardware team to work side
by side.

ATI has to make a radical move and to finally try to match Nvidia in this
market as games like Doom 3 are using this API will certainly benefit from
this new driver.

We are told that the driver won't be finished that soon but it is working
hard to have it finished as soon as possible. µ

Now thats good news....

Works for me.. kinda funny though that it takes the release of ONE game to
update opengl, when there are SO many graphic applications that suffer
because of old outdated opengl drivers.

Good point!
I think, this also shows how ATI is shallow-minded and cares only about
profit coming from mass consumer maket, not about producing good products
that also appeal to professionals, and overall customer satisfaction.

Yeah Quake 3 engined games suck at only 300FPS.

Are you serious about this, or was this supposed to be a joke?
If you are serious, Jeeez!
Are you aware of how old Quake 3 and its engine for that matter, are?

But until Doom 3 comes along, practically all the games that use
OpenGL are based on the Quake 3 engine, which has no performance
problems on ATI cards.

True.. for gaming...

Toss Lightwave 3D, maya, 3DMax, Vue 4 pro, Unreal, and Unreal Tournament 1
at an ati and watch the garbage, missing polys, and incompatabilities, and
watch apps break because the drivers do not work properly, and you'll see
the problem.

Many applications rely on the opengl tech, rather then directx tech, and
that's why many developers are sold on Nvidia instead of ATI.

And before you consider me and ATI basher, also notice the post that I'm
upgrading my old 8500 AIW cards to 6800xt aiw cards this week. It's not that
I don;t like ATI, but many of the applications I rely upon for my WORK have
issues with ATI's drivers.

I'm hoping these upgrades improve thier performance, and correct some of
these issues.
