I have put together a new machine consisting of...
Intel D865PERL + 3.0ghz P4 w/800mhz FSB + newest drivers
2gb Corsair TwinX XMS 2-2-2-5
4 WD 74gb 10krpm Raptors (2-raid 1=C:-System, 2-raid 0=E:-Temp)
2 WD 200gb 7200rpm (raid 1=D:-Data)
2 Plextor 712 DVD burners
1 Mitsumi card reader w/floppy
Logitech/Bluetooth wireless kbd & mouse
1 Lian Li 6077 case, 550w PSU + 8 fans
Windows XP SP2
I am pleased with this endeavour. It is fault tolerant, has adequate speed
and capacity and represents a major step up from the 733mhz P3 I had been
using
Then I spoiled it all by installing an ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 Radeon Pro.
On paper the board and software package has all of the features I am looking
for, but on delivery, even after installing the newest XP ATI software
drivers, it REALLY sux the big one. When any features above that of a
standard graphics card are used, it makes the system unstable. The system
might reboot itself after several minutes to hours of simply watching TV.
If not that, then ATIMMC.exe will barf and notify Microsoft. The TV
Listings app will loose the mouse pointer at the drop of a hat. Several
times the TV view has died while the TV audio remains which then takes a
reboot to recover from. It is a mess. I know the system can be stable
because I did not connect cable to the AIW for several weeks after initial
power-up and used it as a simple graphics card which worked just fine.
What can I do at this point? Is it fixable? Can I salvage portions of the
video subsystem and software or should I scrap the whole ATI approach and go
with a different vendor offering similar features?
Thanks,
Gene
