ATI AIW 9600XT Question: sound w/o cable?

Further info re my question:

I have an Intel MB with sound on board and no place to
connect a sound cable from AIW 9600XT to MB as supposedly
required by user manual.

Currently I can play any music CD or video in either the CD or DVD
drive with resulting sound thru external speakers via MB. MB has
on-board sound and no way to connect a sound cable. There is
NO sound cable from either CD or DVD drive to MB nor any way to
connect one.

According to everyone I've talked to, there can be no music sound
w/o a connection from drives to MB. However, it does work via Win
Media Player. Now, the question: is sound likely to work with the
AIW 9600XT installed?

Anyone with any experience with this setup?

As far as I know, you are out of luck. The AIW line explicitly requires a
line-in jack for audio to work. My motherboard has onboard sound too, but
it also has a 'blue' line-in jack for me to plug into. I think you really
need that.

I've had AIW cards for a while. On my old ATI Radeon AIW (32MB), when I
built my old computer, I tried to eliminate the 'line in' cable and hook up
the audio cable internally to the motherboard, and it didn't work, even
though the manual said it would. I *had* to use the line-in jack.

I don't think things have changed, as I now have a AIW 9600, and the guide
ONLY mentions external cable - internal wiring isnt mentioned at all
anymore...

The internal cable is used to send an analogue sound signal to a Sound
Processor, without that cable connected there is no (implemented) way of
getting sound from the AIW to the Sound Processor. As for your being able
to play music CDs etc without a cable from the drive, this is because
Windows Media Player "prefers" to digitally extract sound/music from CDs via
the drives IDE cable.

My 9800 AIW came with a link lead that went from the SVHS socket to the
Line In/Mic on the motherboard jack sockets.

As for no music without a connection from the drives to the
motherboard, that USED to be the case but Win2k/XP use data over IDE to
do it rather than the CD Audio lead.

I do have two connectors on MB, one labeled "CD-ROM connector (ATAPI)",
and the other "Aux line-in connector (ATAPI)". Both connectors take an
audio type plug but neither specifically states for sound input. Is
this the
"line-in" jack you refer to above?

hi, no those are internal connectors that won't work. i mean that on my
computer case, right near the green jack where i plug my speakers in, there
is a blue-coloured jack. that's a line-in jack.

Reason I discounted that i/p is because it's external and would require
bringing the wire from 9600XT outside the case. Is this what you had to
do?

no, on the AIW, you just put the card in the slot and close up your case.
then you plug a massive bunch of cords into a space on the card from
outside the case (rca outs, s-video outs, etc)... one of these cords is a
short audio cable. you plug that into the blue line-in jack.

On my 9800 AIW it has a CDROM audio cable header that hooks up to the
CDROM Audio cable header on the motherboard. In ATI MMC, I select CD
Audio as the sound source.

No. I did it that way but onthe 9800AIW there's a CDROM audio cable
header so I used a cable from that to the CD Audio cable header on the
motherboard.
