I have a ati 9700 pro video card with all the updates.
Everytime i play a game it crashes within about 10
minutes. i thought it might have been the heat. I have
two fans aside from the cpu and video card. i read
around and found out it might be hyperthreading. how do
you turn that off and also what Bios setting would be the
best to have. there is also fastwrite what does that
do.

Having two ventilation fans in the case may not be enough to properly
cool the 9700. I have a similar setup and had to use a slot fan under
the video card to cool it enough to play games for more than a few
minutes at a time. When I am playing a game I can feel the heat coming
out of the fan.

You probably do not have a heat problem at all.... first off you need to
make sure you have your latest motherboard drivers installed (this will
update your AGP chipset drivers). There are currently known issues with the
ATI driver and bad or not installed AGP drivers.
Also make sure you update to the new ATI driver.....

Check forums at:
http://rage3d.com for detailed help. That said, first check your RAM by
running Memtest86 as RAM seems to be most common problem. Also look to see
if new BIOS (along with chipset drivers) is available for your motherboard
and experiment with BIOS settings in CMOS setup. It could be a bad card,
test in different computer. Did you have a previous video card? Sometimes
the previous drivers cannot be removed easily (NVIDIA) and need special
removal program (NFR).

In my case I did have all the latest drivers installed and still had the
overheating problem. I could barely touch the video card after it
crashed to the desktop. Putting in the slot fan solved the overheating
problem and I could play for hours without any problems. Part of the
problem is that AGP cards put all the "hot" parts facing down so that
the air does not flow over them properly and the heat can not just rise.
I agree that drivers can be a problem, which is why I went to the Radeon
from an nVidia card, but they are not the only thing that can go wrong.
