Every now & then in World of Warcraft, maybe more when cold, this box I am
working on with an ATI 9550 is getting a checkerboard effect across the
entire monitor. Hard reset is the only thing to fix it.

Win2K
VIA KT266
AthlonXP 1800+
512 RAM (1 stick)
SB128

Installed the latest drivers last night, no "control center".

Maybe this is a common issue? Any ideas?

1) Make sure all fans are working. What you describe is a classic sypmtom of
overheating.
2)You should have the 4.43 (or later) Via 4-in-1 drivers for your
motherboard installed not just Windows' generic drivers. These include an
AGP driver.
3)Make sure fast-writes in the motherboards bios is disabled - can cause
problems.
4)Use the 4.12 or 5.1 drivers for your graphics card. Older drivers are
often more stable for older cards of the 9xxx series.
5)Look for a patch for the game that addresses problems with the game and
certain cards.

1) All fans working although the video card is passive, heat sink, no fan.
I have seen a checkerboard problem before, with a Gainward Nvidia card.
Cold booting only (as it appears to be with this card) & that turned out to
be a capacitor problem & Gainward RMA'd it. Don't think this is a heat
issue. Also tried another PS but I had the same issue.

2) Yes, I got the latest VIA drivers. Re-installed the AGP last night
followed by the latest ATI drivers.

3) On or off, fast writes seem to have no effect.

4) Did not see where the older drivers were on ATI's site but let me google
it.

5) As far as I know, this is not particular to World of Warcraft, could be
wrong though. MMORPG, patches itself.

I am beginning to think this is a RMA problem. Not my card or machine so I
can't even chat with ATI about it yet.

Thanks for the reply.

Heres the link for the 5.1s
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/920...ers/wxp-w2k-catalyst-8-09-041221m-020455c.exe
and I would make sure on the overheating by opening up the case and
directing a desk fan into it. If the heatsink is the pin mounted type (and
they all bloody well should be but some arent) then you can remove it -
clean off the old paste and apply some fresh and make sure the heatsink it
properly fitted. I did this to my current card and found that whoever fitted
the heatsink left the plastic wrapping on the thermal pad which really
messed up the cooling!

Thanks for the link, I will try that. I was kinda hoping maybe that someone
had seen this checkerboard issue & either had a fix or confirm it was a bad
card & needed RMAing.
