My son has the ATI 8500 and does not have the manual. I've looked for it at
ATI but could not find it. My main question is: On the vid card is the white
connector an in for a power connector? It looks the same as the floppy
drive power. Will the card work w/o it as my Geforce card works w/o the
connector on it but only at a lower setting.

When looking for a manual it is a good idea to know who produced your card.
ATI produced the chip, but the card may have been produced by a number of
other manufacturers.

Without knowing excactly what card you have this is hard to guess. But my
8500-based card does not have a connector for adding more power. It does
however have a connector for an attached fan. Does your card have a fan? If
so, is it attached?

It's likely the power connector for the firewire ports. It's optional
to use it - you don't need it if you don't have any firewire peripherals
that require power from the port.

Thanks...I swear I couldn't find it yesterday....lol...I thought it was
weird that they would not have support for it anymore.

If your son's machine has the white floppy connector style power receptacle
its likely an 8500DV and the manuals for those can be found here:

I have one of these cards and you only have to connect that power connector
(as already mentioned) if you use the firewire ports - if you don't you
should also ensure both of the small switches on the board are set to off.
otherwise you can always buy a HDD -> FDD power adapter cable (converts a
spare hard drive power connector to a floppy style connector) for full
functionality.

Here's the info from ATI on the 8500DV connector.
