I have a Compaq Presario 1687 notebook with an ATI 3D Rage LT Pro
video card. I upgraded the processor to a K6-3 450 and maxed the
memory out to 192 megs. I installed Windows 98 SE on the system and
it ran rock stable without a bit of trouble. I put it up for sale and
a friend of my wants to buy it, but he wants Windows XP on it. That's
where my problems began.
The XP install detects all of the hardware but as soon as the desktop
loads the system locks up tight. If I boot in VGA mode or disable the
video driver, the system works fine. With the driver disabled the
screen draw speed is dismal and any kind of multimedia stuff is out of
the question, but I think it proves it's definitely a video driver
problem.
I managed to find a couple of non-WHQL XP drivers for the 3D Rage LT
Pro but they behaved the same way. I've also tried installing XP with
HAL set for standard PC (non-ACPI) but that also made no difference.
Compaq offers no XP drivers at all for this notebook.
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your help.
