ATI 3.9 drivers slow my computer to a crawl

Jim

I'm not sure what happened but I upgraded to the 3.9 drivers on my ATI 9600.
The screen fill in from top to bottom now when I pull up any applications
such as IE6. Kazaa acts like my CPU is over taxed when I flip between
screens or try to select a download. I checked my task manager and my CPU
and memory are fine. I have 60 gig of free disk space. I did not modify
the default settings when I installed the new drivers. The refresh rate is
fine. Other than installing old drivers, are there any suggestions.

P.S. this wasn't an issue before I updated the drivers.

Yep - thanks - not an issue. The issue is with the 3.9 drivers, not a
virus. I'm using a version of Kazaa lite which does not have any spyware
highjackware or anything else. I've verified what services are loaded in
memory.

I can use the old drivers and it works fine. The issue is with the 3.9
drivers but I'm trying to isolate where.

Try turning off VPU Recover.

Hi Jim

I had the same issue and solved it (after advice from this NG) by doing a
complete uninstall of the Cat 3.7 drivers (Add/Remove programs from CP then
used a program called Driver Cleaner - do a google search) and then
installing the 3.9 drivers.

Sorry if you've already tried the above but this solved the treacle like
display response problem you're describing (using a 9700 np).

(Unfortunately the 3.9's caused serious graphical corruption with Star Trek
Fleet Command 3 so had to go back to 3.7 :o(

Now I wonder what drivers I should install when I get my 9800 pro?
What drivers are you using Ben?

I have always used the latest driver officially released and thats pretty
much always worked for me. Thats in relation to every hardware component
I've ever owned.

I was using the 3.8s, and have since installed the Cat 3.9s but played any
games yet.

My recomendation is to install the latest available when you get the card
and go from there... if you have a specific problem that you know can be
fixed by using an older release, consider it.
Trying to read up before the card gets here or my eyes fall out of
their sockets, which ever comes first! ;p

My Crucial 9800 Pro continually blows me away, I'm extremely impressed.

Not played it... can't comment. I'd have assumed disabling VPU recover
would have sorted it, but they recommend the 3.7s... Who knows.

simpler solution is to turn AGP fast writes to "off"

Simpler than what? Downgrading to 3.7 or turning off Vpu Recover?

I haven't noticed any problems with fast writes on mine, maybe I'm just not
using software that causes or highlights the problems.
