I'm currently running an Athlon 1800+ xp chip on an ASUS A7V333 motherboard.

I've been noticing lately that my CPU temp is higher than it used to be
before. It's currently sitting at 78 C. I believe before it used to be
around 67 C. This is true even when my CPU is less than 5% usage.

I only have one fan in my pc, on the heatsink above the chip. I don't have
a case fan!

I'm suspecting it's the power supply (generic). Should I consider something
else before I go out and by a new power supply?

Also, what good power supply should I get? 300W, 350W, or 400W. Does it
matter if it has one or two fans? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you tried removing the CPU heatsink and fan. Cleaning it thoroughly
and reinstalling it with new thermal paste/grease? Maybe dirt on the fins
also!
What is the temp when you first turn on the computer?
later,
dave

Different BIOSes use different methods for reading CPU temperature.
Updating to a newer BIOS may give you lower readings.

I do not know the exact terminology, but the temp can be read
from a diode on the motherboard beneath the CPU or directly
from the CPU's on-board diode - which is higher but more accurate.

ASUS supported the later for some time, but then switched to the
former in new BIOSes because there were too many alarmist
reports.

In their 'Thermal, Mechanical, and Chassis Cooling Design Guide'

AMD recommend a backside outblowing case fan - see airflow Fig. 11
(loc. cit. p. 16).

The PSU should come from a good manufacturer; see, e.g., the listing

with two fans and 350W (+3,3V: 28A, +5V: 30A, +12V: 15/18A) - see
Table 1 in

I had that problem with my A7N8X 2500+ Barton combination.
Everything was fine for a year... all of a sudden, one day... it's like 10
degrees hotter
and i noticed I couldn't do a BIOS update..it just plain wouldn't let me.
Asus said
"take the battery out and short the RTC memory to clear it". After I did
this...
I could burn in the new BIOS... and my fan speed was up and temp was cooler.

go figger.
