Athlon64 or P4 800Mhz with HT?

This has probably been beat to death already, but...

Comparing the new AMD 64bit CPU's and 800mhz P4's with HT....
- Dollar for dollar (under $300 Cdn), which will give better performance in
a Q3 benchmark? MadOnion benchmark? Sandra 2001 benchmark?
- Under normal use (surfing, word pro, CD writing) which pumps out more
heat?
- Under heavy use/benchmarking (Q3, Unreal Tourney, etc.) which pumps out
more heat?

....did I miss anything?

Looking at making a purchase at the end of December or start of January.

I don't want to start an Intel vs AMD war. Just give me numbers...

Interesting question - AMD /claim/ that the new Opterons are 20% faster than
the fastest HT P4, but I've yet to see any figures...I suppose Tom's
Hardware would be the obvious place to look - but you're not taking into
consideration Intel's forthcoming Prescott processor (why anyone would name
a processor after our lard mountain of a deputy prime minister is beyond me
<j/k>) though a launch date for that has yet to be announced, though I heard
it was the first quarter of next year, so I guess we'd better just deal with
the here and now.

Actually, fugger THG, it's just too damned confusing. Someone else can
assist you, I *really* must go and get some sleep...

LOL! Exactly where I'm coming from... It would be so nice just to decide on
$xxxx and then build the best of each for that amount and compare them.

....anyone got some spare cash lying around?

Personally i would pick an Athlon64!!!!!! Its ****in great

Maybe, but I'm not happy with the T-birds compared to equivilents Intel
parts. Add in AMD's questionable rating scheme and I need to be convinced
that AMD's are worth the hassle of extra cooling, etc.

Intel chips run hotter and performance of a 3-generation old CPU isn't
relevant anyway, don't assume the past = present or future.

We are not AMD, we aren't trying to sell one of their CPUs, so we
won't try to convince you to buy one. If you want Intel, buy Intel.
Either way, there are plenty of people using either solution, so
decide what the most demanding tasks are this system will perform,
then seek relevant benchmarks.
