I do not understand the difference between these CPU chips. Are they both
64-bit? Is one better? Will a motherboard designed for one accept either?
I want to build a 64-bit system, that is buy a motherboard and 64-bit AMD
chip, just not sure how to choose what AMD cpu chip to buy. I want a
system for some gaming, but also very much so for 2D computer graphic art
and also 3D object design and rendering. I just bought an e-GeForce FX
5700LE 256MB DDR AGP 8x/4x graphics card.

Heres from another Xbit lab review way back Jan 1 :

AMD took a more aggressive stance in promoting its Athlon 64 processor
this year. They rolled out the Athlon 64 3400+, dropped the price for
the 3200+ model to $278, and introduced the cheaper Athlon 64 3000+
that costs just above $200.

This marketing policy will surely push up the sales of Socket754
processors, as they are now quite a good choice for building a
mainstream or high-end computer system. So, the question which
mainboard to choose for such a processor, becomes an urgent one. We
shouldn’t be afraid of the allegedly short lifecycle of the Socket754
itself. AMD is planning to introduce faster models like the Athlon 64
3700+ for this socket and even then the Socket754 won’t die but move
gradually into the low-end price range.

Not sure how this all shakes out. What state its in now. Its all a
bit confusing. I havent really been following it closely since 64 bits
are bit expensive still . Probably think about them more and more as
summer approaches and may even upgrade over the summer or Xmas. Depnds
on how the socket stuff shakes out and prices. I dont want a deadend
socket type and I like to buy things at a really low price that has
decent performance.

Duh I left out the main part.

The opteron is listed for servers dont know much about it.

Theres the FX 64 bit 940 socket in various CPUs top end.
Then theres the regular 64 bit 754 socket.
They are coming out with a FX 939 socket thats supposed to lower the
cost of the FX chips , and its the one getting a lot of talk. One guy
has a roadmap at his site in which he predicts the FX chips dropping
to $200 in NOV.

The 754 socket MBs and chips are the affordable ones now .

I see the VIA K8T800 and Nforce3 150 754 sockets cheap (motherboards)
$70-100 and a few up to 150.

I think I also see the same chip set for the 940s but they are in the
$170-200 range and the chipset that many seem to have been waiting for
the Nforce3 250. Not sure if its only for the FX or both ( meaning two
different boards - Ive never seen ONE board that can take both
sockets).

There are some article back in dec talking about SIS I think working
on a board that can take both AGP and PCI express but most articles
say they wont be compatible - the new boards that eventually come out
unless SIS becomes is sucessful will only have PCI express.
