Hi all,

Just bought an Athlon 64 3200+ Processor in a Box. It came with the
chip and a HSF but no mounting (retention frame) bracket. Is this
correct? I checked AMDs site but couldn't find a list of contents? The
directions in the box state to install a Retention Frame but don't say
if it supplied. I don't want to install it without some kind of
bracket.

FYI - My motherboard Abit KV8 Max3 didn't come with a bracket either.

Can anyone who bought this line of CPU in the box verify if these
things come with or without a retention frame.

TIA

You're referring to the P4 type mounting bracket? Athlon CPUs do not
require these. You get a clip on the heat sink and fan unit that
attaches to either side of the socket that the CPU is inserted into. Be
careful when clicking the retention clip into place (if yours requires a
flat head srewdriver or nut driver) that you don't slip and gouge the
motherboard.

I just built a system based upon an Athlon 64.....at least with the
board I purchased, MSI K8T, you do need the mounting bracket. You
have to attached the mounting bracket to the board and then the CPU.

BTW, mine came with the motherboard, not the CPU.

My bad! For some reason I didn't register that he was talking about an
Opteron! You do indeed need a back plate and a retention frame!

An Opteron is NOT an Athlon 64, different ball of wax.

The AMD site appears to provide the same installation guide for
both...

My point being, they use different sockets, different internal architecture,
calling one the other may cause some confusion.

Ok so here's what happened. I bought the stuff - CPU, MB, memory,
etc, at Fry's Electronics. So for anyone knows Fry's, nuff said. Well
anyway, I went back and asked for a replacement CPU. What I got was
the same deal, no backplate or retention frame. So, I go to the
department Manager and he says that they don't come with them and that
the motherboard has them. I then tell him I'm going to my car to get
the MB and show him where in the manual it says these come with the
CPU and then will have to return it and the CPU since I can't use them
without the frame and backplate. I come back and while I'm waiting for
him I notice on the new CPU that it says right on the box....

This package contains: AMD Athlon 64 processor, Heatsink/fan,
retention frame, backplate, bezel sticker etc...

Why I didn't see this before I'll never know.

He comes back with a new motherboard and out of the blue this one has
the frame and backplate in it! I figure no need to press the issue
since I now have what I want. I do show him the CPU box and suggests
he notifies AMD that their packers leave something to be desired so
that others don't suffer my torment! I'm thinking that it did no good
but who knows! :)

So now it's onto building my new rig.

Thansk for the replies!
