Athlon 64 1gb memory limitations............???

I was considering purchasing a notebook Athlon 64. The problem is that
for some reason the on chipset currenlty limits you 1 GB of ram. This
makes no sense since you are defeating the main purpose of 64 bit
processor. Has anyone heard when AMD is coming out with a new chipset
to overcome this memory limitation......???

Where did you hear it was limited to 1 GB? The last I had seen, it was
4 GB, and that was because of the current size of memory modules
available, not because of the controller!

The AMD64's memory controller is integrated into the CPU, not the board
chipset!

The limit at the moment is 2G due to the size of available DIMMs. Checkout
the Compaq R3000Z.

BTW the 754 pin Athlon 64 3400+ with 1M of cache runs rings around the 939
pin Athlon 64 3800+ with 1/2M of cache. I have a Compaq R3000Z laptop with
the 3400+ and 1G of DDR333 memory and a Compaq GX5000Z desktop with an
Athlon 3800+ and 1.5G of dual channel DDR 400. I've been doing extensive
benchmarking on the machines doing Verilog simulations, GCC makes, and
Xilinx place and routes. I've had some very surprising results. On tasks
with a lot of I/O the desktop machine is slightly faster then the laptop,
this is probably due to the fact that it has a much faster disk. On purely
CPU bound tasks, i.e. a simulation that doesn't save any state and only
prints out a pass/fail at the end, the laptop with the 3400+ is nearly
twice as fast as the desktop with a 3800+.

I suspect you don't fully understand the purposes of a 64-bit
processor, or the current implementation limits. There are
existing AMD 64 designs that support far more memory than you
are wishing for. Here are some noteworthy examples:

There may be some systems which have a limited amount of
expansion capability, for example notebooks, which people do
not typically use to host enterprise databases.

It's not just about address space either. Think about data
types, file offsets, file system limitations, I/O bandwidth issues,
etc.

The reason it makes no since (sic) is because it is false. I know of several
people currently running an A64 notebook with 2GB of RAM. Feel free to swing
by notebookforums.com, and in particular the Gateway/emachines sections fo
rmany examples.
