Hi,

I've just received a batch of Sandisk 512Mb C/F (non-ultra version) and
can't convert them to fixed. Using the atcfwchg command they return an
error #7.
The only difference between this batch and previous supplied from
Sandisk is the markings.
The version that can't be updated are dated on the rear sticker with
2000 whilst the batch that work are dated with 03.

Rumor has it that SanDisk doesn't support the utulity any more. You might
want to search this NG for details.

Thanks Sean,

Got lucky just purchased 1GB sandisk (dated 03) and they worked and
double lucky from the point that priced dropped significanlty in the
last week to be around $10 up in price.

Rob.

P.S. You book is a expensive...but handy tool.

Hi Sean,

Could you please be more specific about "search this NG for details", if
possible?
I am using SanDisk compact flash media with NTFS formating. I don't think
it is possible to format the CF as NTFS without setting it to non-removable
media. So far, the only way I have found to do that is atcfwchg.

I am using EWF in the RAM Registry mode, so do not require any additional
partitions. It might be ok to change to FAT format, but I would rather not
if it is not necessary. Our CF is not physically removable. NTFS seems like
it might be preferable because it is more modern. (but... not necessarily)

Thanks for any ideas,
....Jim Hughen

Someone on the newsgroup posted feedback from SanDisk that they no longer
supported the utility to change their cards from removable from fixed.
SanDisk also dropped selling fixed versions of their devices. That is all I
have. NTFS requires fixed device.

You might want to check out the other CF vendors like SimpleTech or Silicon
Systems.

Hi Jim,
From my limited experience and understanding, anything below a Sandisk
1GB may use two types of controllers ones that do support the atcfwchg
command and....ones that don't therefore can't be set to fixed.
I "suspect" that sandisk have two factories supplying different
technology.
Have found it cheaper (not needing the features of industrial grade C/F
cards) to use the 1GB Sandisk cards that do support the atcfwchg
command as opposed to having to purchase industrial grade of the
Simpletech and Silicon Systems which are more expensive.

Rob.

Thanks Sean and Rob,

This info is very helpful to make decisions on CF vendors and system design.

A pretty hard question, ...but do you think NTFS is a plus enough to hassle
with the fixed/removable or just switch over to a FAT file structure?

EWF RAM Registry looks to be working just fine.

Jim,

If you need to get control over individual file and directory security
settings, and/or compression, NTFS is the better solution. If not, FAT is
much easier to work with CF cards.
