ATAPI errors Trouble With My CDRW/DVD Drive

I have suddenly developed a problem with my Samsung CDRW /DVD 352N Combo
Drive.

The problem initially started by my drive not being able to read Mixed
Content Data DVD's. (I could play CD's etc).
Now I can't even access my drive and when I try to reinstall the drive after
uninstalling it from the system manager on reboot the machine Instead of
identitfying it as a Samsung CDR / DVD 352 N the computer is identifying a

SAMQULG CDRU/ DVD QM 352L



In the event viewer I get constant ATAPI errors , Event ID 9 under system
( This error message is the most regular one I get in my event viewer)
however earlier the initial symptoms and warnings and error messages that I
see in my event viewer for this particular problem are listed below)

Can someone help me solving this problem. would be appreciated.

In my event viewer I keep getting system errors & warnings.
 
Most all cdrom/rw/dvdrom/rw hardware have firmware updates at the mfg
web site,download & install..Also,once you uninstalled,you might have
shutdown
pc,then plugged in the hardware to another IDE connection.

You should *not* attempt to flash the firmware on an optical drive,
when the interface is obviously flaky and error prone. This will
only result in the drive getting bricked and no longer responding.

Instead, you have to discover whether the drive is defective, or
the problem is at the computer end.

I would try an 80 wire IDE cable, assuming this is an IDE (ribbon cable)
type drive. 80 wire cables have better signal transmission properties
than 40 wire cables. On the 80 wire cable, every second signal is a
ground, which helps define transmission line impedance, and also
helps a bit with crosstalk.

The next thing to check, is the connector being used on the cable. If the
cable has two connectors on the drives end, and there is only a single
device in use, it goes on the end connector.

Do it this way instead. With a single drive, use the end connector. The
signal quality will be better. If you use an 80 wire cable, instead of
a 40 wire cable, that also improves the signal quality.

Thanks Paul,
I already have 80 wire IDE cable in my machine.

I didn't update the firmware as windows XP installed it with generic
drivers and not the firmware.
I think the problem is at the computer end or even with the BIOS as I
have noticed that the BIOS is not recognizing the drive correctly in
the first place.
Will flashing the BIOS make it detect the drive properly (or resetting
the BIOS configuration) help?

I already have 80 wire IDE cable in my machine.

I didn't update the firmware as windows XP installed it with generic
drivers and not the firmware.
I think the problem is at the computer end or even with the BIOS as I
have noticed that the BIOS is not recognizing the drive correctly in
the first place.
Will flashing the BIOS make it detect the drive properly (or resetting
the BIOS configuration) help?

The IDE ribbon cable, has a 16 bit data interface on it. The pinout
for the cable is shown here.

The identity string you posted, would come across the cable something like this.
The characters would come across the cable, two ASCII characters at a time.

I use the hexadecimal table here, to translate the characters into hex.
A hex digit holds four binary bits. So hex 4D 51 = 0100 1101 0101 0001

Now, I'll take your identity string, and print it in a table, two
characters at a time. Then compare the corrupt and correct values.

There is a problem with one particular wire on the cable. If the
identity string cannot be read in the BIOS, it means there is a
serious signal issue of some sort. (And all other communications
would be corrupted as well, like ATAPI commands and so on.)

If the computer has two ribbon cables for hard drives, you can
swap the cables at the motherboard. Then, start the computer
and examine the strings in the BIOS again. Is the problem still
with the Samsung optical drive ? If so, then the problem is
somewhere on that cable. Does the cable have two devices on
it ? What happens if the Samsung is used on the cable by
itself ? (Remember to use the end connector, if the Samsung
is the only drive on the cable.)

If there are two devices on the cable, one could be interfering
with the other. It is hard to say at this point, which device is
defective. It could even be the cable itself which is bad.

You have to try a number of test cases, to narrow down which item
causes the problem.

So far, there is *no* indication that flash updating anything
in the computer is going to help. This is an electrical signal
issue of some sort.

If swapping the cables with the drives still attached, causes
a problem for the other drives, then the motherboard could have
a failing or weak IDE interface.

It is possible there is a "drive strength" setting for IDE in
the BIOS. That is about all I can think of, as a contributor
at the motherboard end, other than a hardware defect. The
BIOS should automatically select the correct drive strength,
if it is programmable.

You should *not* attempt to flash the firmware on an optical drive,
when the interface is obviously flaky and error prone. This will
only result in the drive getting bricked and no longer responding.

Instead, you have to discover whether the drive is defective, or
the problem is at the computer end.

I would try an 80 wire IDE cable, assuming this is an IDE (ribbon cable)
type drive. 80 wire cables have better signal transmission properties
than 40 wire cables. On the 80 wire cable, every second signal is a
ground, which helps define transmission line impedance, and also
helps a bit with crosstalk.

The next thing to check, is the connector being used on the cable. If the
cable has two connectors on the drives end, and there is only a single
device in use, it goes on the end connector.

Do it this way instead. With a single drive, use the end connector. The
signal quality will be better. If you use an 80 wire cable, instead of
a 40 wire cable, that also improves the signal quality.

I have suddenly developed a problem with my Samsung CDRW /DVD 352N Combo
Drive.
The problem initially started by my drive not being able to read Mixed
Content Data DVD's. (I could play CD's etc).
Now I can't even access my drive and when I try to reinstall the drive after
uninstalling it from the system manager on reboot the machine Instead of
identitfying it as a Samsung CDR / DVD 352 N the computer is identifying a
SAMQULG CDRU/ DVD QM 352L
In the event viewer I get constant ATAPI errors , Event ID 9 under system
( This error message is the most regular one I get in my event viewer)
however earlier the initial symptoms and warnings and error messages that I
see in my event viewer for this particular problem are listed below)
Can someone help me solving this problem. would be appreciated.

I think it's time to replace that DVD drive.
