Hi there. I have a problem with a Maxtor NAS:

1. whose MB BIOS supports ATA100
2. the drives (all WD2000JB 200 gig) are ATA100
3. the BIOS POST recognizes them as such
4. using the right 80 wire cables
5. "Use DMA if available" enabled on the pri/sec channels

but Win2k3 SP1 only is operating the drives at UDMA1 (comfirmed by various
utils and HD Tach). I did find some reg hacks for "EnableUDMA66" and
"EnableUDMA100", but they had no effect Can anyone think of anything else
I can do? Thanks for reading.

And you have the BLUE end of the IDE cable attached to the mobo IDE slot,
while the BLACK end it attached to the HD, correct?

Thanks for the reply. Yes I do. I suppose I should have mentioned this
is an Intel 815E chipset board. I nosed around Intel.com a while and ran
across the Intel Application Accelerator (IAA) and Google'd same. It's
apparently the last iteration of the Intel Ultra ATA storage driver
applicable to my chipset. Only thing is, it's not certified for W2k3
(just Win9x, 2000 and XP). Well, that's pretty close. I'll try it.

Even if not, that doesn't get you "UDMA1".

I had a similar problem with a Compaq PC recently running XP SP2. Each
drive by itself, or alone on a separate IDE controller, would run at UDMA 5.
But put two of them on the same cable and they drop to UDMA 4. After
pulling my hair out for a couple of weeks, I discovered a single-line entry
at the Compaq support site saying that the BIOS would drop to UDMA 4 if two
drives were on the same controller "to prevent theoretical data loss."
Well, no BIOS upgrades available, so I am stuck.

Who says? BIOS is BIOS, driver is driver.

Thanks for the reply. I did find I could set the BIOS to force UDMA4
(but not 5), but both burst and average read are far below what they
should be. For now, I have added a Promise Ultra 100 TX2, although since
I'm running Windows software RAID5, the SMART utils won't read the
disks' status. I guess that's all I can do. Thanks again.
