At startup, Loading Personal Settings - takes FOREVER! Hangs!

I have an HP OmniBook Laptop, x86 (Pentium III) 660 MHZ
with 128 MB Ram.

I did a full XP install on a completely reformated HD with
19 GB partition.

Everytime, I boot up, it tries loading personal settings
and just hangs. I only have XP and Norton security, not
any other program. I've read of a lot of people having
this problem on tech boards. This is rediculously
frustrating and stupid for an advanced op sys.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have my network
settings to DHCP because that's what my Cable ISP tells me
I have to do. Many have said that the problem stems from
this. Give me a break.

Things like this make OS X look better all the time. (Yes,
I have both)

Any help greatly appreciated.

Has it ever fully booted to the desktop or has this been a problem since you
installed XP. My guess is, you didn't run the compatibility check before
setting up XP and you didn't check the HP site for any issues or necessary
patches from HP with regard to XP.

I would suggest, returning to your previous operating system, once done,
while at that desktop, place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen
appears, select Check System Compatibility. If you are able to boot to XP
or at least safe mode (boot the system, start tapping F8, when the menu
appears, select Safe Mode and press enter) and run the compatibility check
from there. Actually, I'm not sure if the compatibility wizard will run
from Safe Mode but it will run from XP.

In any event, that's a good place to start with regard to trying to diagnose
the issue.
