Hi guys,

I've just taken over a Windows 2000 server. When the system starts-up it pops
up a message saying "At least one device or service failed during system
startup" I have followed the following steps to try and find the cause:

1. Checked that all services set to start automatically are running, they are
2. Checked that all hardware is installed correctly (even view hidden items
in device manager) No problems
3. Tried to check the event viewer, for further info, but nothing is posted!!!

The server is operating without any problems (2000 with SP4) and I can't
understand what could be the cause of this???

Any ideas?

Try using this method of viewing hidden devices

Nothing at all is posted in the Event Log? Absolutely nothing? Zip,
nada bug all? No events of any sorts? Turn the Event Logging service
on (Automatic) or set it to overwrite events as necessary!

The usual messages are logged during startup but they are all informational.
No errors that could indicate a problem somewhere.

If there are no "phantom" devices and if no errors are showing in the
Event Log this might be difficult to figure out. You can stick the /sos
or the /bootlog switch to the boot.ini file and see if anything useful
can be had from that. You might also find useful information using the
latest Autoruns version from Sysinternals. The last version has lots of
information that earlier versions didn't show. Other than that go to
Microsoft.com and search and sift on the error message.

Hi Jerold,
See tip 1261 » At Least One Service or Driver Failed.... and no
System Event entry? in the 'Tips & Tricks' at http://www.jsifaq.com

can you tell us where to download netsvc.exe and sc.exe? These tools
appear to be part of the windows 2000 resource kit, however, I do not
know if they are available for free because my link I used for ages

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/default.asp

is broken. Are the tools also available in Windows 2003? Can the be
used to check a Win2k-Server?

If it has 2 network cards in it & only one is in use you may get this. There
is a registry hack to eliminate it. I just cannot remember exactly what it
is. It is related to the load balancing service that does not show up in
services. Sorry thats all i have for you.
