Hello,
I am new to this group but came across it doing a google
search. I have a question and I hope that I may be able to get some
help or advice here.
I have an old Pentium 100 with windows 95 in an AT case. First off I
absolutely love the case and really want to keep it.
Is it possible to upgrade this pc? I would like to upgrade to a
pentium 4 if at all possible. My main objective is this... I would not
care if I had to gut the entire machine and change every single thing
in it. I just want to keep the case! Everything is ATX now so is there
anything I can do to this AT case that would allow the newer
motherboards in it?
I apologize in advance if anyone has asked this question, but if
anyone has please advise me on what my options are.

Thanks,

P.S. This is a home built PC.

If you are very handy with metal working you might be able to fit it
in there. Power supply will have to be replaced. Power switch must be
replaced. Mounting holes and standoffs for the motherboard won't line
up. Cut outs in the back will not line up. A lot of work would be
required. Then there is always the possibility of bad airflow, which
is one of the main improvements with ATX.

Get a new case you like (or at least can live with) and keep your
current system in its current case.

Are you familar with the phrase "We had
to destroy the village in order to save it"? You *could* no doubt mount an ATX
board in this case with the aid of a drill, a saw, and perhaps a mass of pop
rivets and a metal break. Oh yeah and an ATX power supply... But unless you are
a direct decendent of Mary Shelly you would not like the result. If you are
really nuts about this case you might consider looking on EBay for like a K-6
III 450 with an attached motherboard. Unless you are a gamer or a CAD CAM guy
you might not need anything stronger till 64 bit software starts to appear on
the shelves.

No idea if these are any good and hate Via chipsets but looks like there are
AT upgrade paths.. Be kinda cool to have a P4 box with a "turbo" button :-)

Why destroy an old P100 for no reason? See if you can overclock it, max out
the memory and put it in the garage for looking up prices on
www.tirerack.com. It will even play mp3s.

Get an ATX case & PSU for as little as $42 shipped:

Or separate case and PSU:

In fact that *would* be fun... But in only one place is this board described as
an "AT".
In MANY places it is described as an
ATX. Which do you suppose is correct?

Looking closely at the photo, I say it's NOT an ATX format board because:

1) It does not have an ATX I/O area in the rear.
2) It has headers for an AT PSU. An ATX motherboard will not run with an
AT PSU, but an AT motherboard *will* run with an ATX PSU.

It mentions having an AT keyboard connector so sounds like an AT board to
me.

I had an old PII in an AT case and put a Mini-ITX Motherboard from Via in
it. It was about the only thing that fit. The problem is all the mounting
holes were in the wrong place. You also have to remove the AT power supply
and order a ATX power button. Also the back of the case is different and
there are no rear ports in the right place.
