Asus V8420 v29.4x drivers for WinXP won't work

I have installed WinXP on a partition on my system.
Now I need to install the Asus 29.4x Ti4200 drivers.

I need those spescial drivers because they contain a special page in
the control-panel to adjust OpenGL and DirectX gamma level (not in
Nvidias drivers nor in the new Asus drivers). I'll update the drivers
files after I install the control-panel stuff (did this on Win98, to
make a hybrid with the new Nvidia driver and the Asus enhancements :-)

BUT, my WinXP will not work with the standard 29.40 drivers on the CD
that came with my V8420 card. System boot with lowest resolution, and
only 4 bits color (16 colors), no extra control-panel applets
displayed at all for the vide-card.

Why doesn't it work? It's for WinXP.

Could the Microsoft bundled drivers that are installed by default
interfer? The newer Nvidia refernce drivers work, but they don't
contain the Asus enhancment (no gamme adjust for OpenGL mode).

Does anyone now where I can get other old Asus drivers (I used 29.41
on Win98se, not 29.40)? Or another way to make these old drivers work
(I can't really see why neither modes nor contorl-applets are there)

Have you tried any drivers from the Asus download page ?

Video card drivers are always such a pain. Try uninstalling them.
Or use a driver cleaner (detonator destroyer etc.)

If you run out of ideas, guru3d has plenty of stuff archived.
If you visit there, use a browser with popup protection enabled.

This sounds strange since winxp pro with sp1 supplies my asus ti4400 with
28.xx driver.
But idd i have no control applet in desktop properties then.
I would say like the other poster that asus driver series contain the gamma
adjustment tool you mean.
I believe they even have it as a single tool that you can install.
Hm,i have an asus gf2 card also and both don't need gamma adjustment in
games.
This was a big plus for me since my old diamond viper did need an
addittional gamma tool.
You should try the 44.67 from nvidia,they work for most new games.
You could try nvhardpage tool which let you set hidden settings for your
card.
The newest drivers allow you to set various settings for every game you have
installed,maybe this is something for you.

The newer Asus driver doesn't have the gamma correction for OpenGL in
the same way as the 29.4xx. Now you have to use some keys while inside
the game and adjust on a pop-up display each time. Beside I like the
44.xx series, and Asus only have the latest (6x.xx?) on theit site.

What I did on Win98 was installing the 29.4x Asus driver, and then
replace the driver files with 44.xx ones from the Nvidia driver
(then I got both the gamme OpenGL adjustment AND newest drivers :-)

Some of the problem in WinXP is that it has a build in driver for
Ti4200, and you can't uninstall that (can't change to "Standard VGA
apapter" as in Win98).

But still, the 44.xx Nvidia driver works, so why don't the original
Asus 29.xx, it is written for XP, but only gives choises of 640x480 in
16 color (and no control panel applets), got to be something wrong.

Yep, but not in the same way. In the 29.xx you could preset the OpenGL
gamma. In the 3x.xx and later you have to bring up an OSD display (and
the gamma doesn't get adjusted until you do, kind-of extra work :-)

So on Win98 I installed the Asus 29.xx, then replaced the Nvidia
driver files (they are just renamed) with Nvidia 44.xx, getting both
the old Asus extral adjustment display controls, AND new drivers :-)

I have a CRT display that is a bit dark :-(
