Hello All,

I have had an Inwin full tower case which I purchased back in
1998 with a Celeron 466. Since then I have upgraded to a 650 P3 and
now an AMD 2100+. Everything has been fine except I have a concern
when running games or maxing my CPU when encoding movies. The CPU temp
under normal conditions is about 128-135 degrees F (using the latest
ASUS PC Probe) but when I use the CPU at 100% it jumps anywhere
between 145-147 degrees. I have the standard AMD heat sink and fan
which came with the processor. I also have 1 cooling fan blowing in
air and 2 large fans blowing out from on top of the power supply
(giving 3 fans in total blowing out). First off do I have a problem
with cooling of my CPU or am I ok? Also do you think that my case
airflow isn't set up correctly and if so what recommendations does
anyone have for this? And last but not least should I get an
aftermarket cooling fan and heat sink?

Thanks for your input in advance,
Nick

Hi Nick

First off PC Probe is notoriously inaccurate in its temp. readings. I
would go for Mother Board Monitor (MBM5 from
http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

Also, are the temps you report for the onboard CPU diode or the CPU
Socket? If its for the diode then your are doing fine (mine tops out
under load at 62C or 143F). If its for the CPU Socket then you are
running a bit hot.

Thanks for the tip Harry. I downloaded motherboard monitor and it appears to read the same temperature as the asus probe (so I guess ASUS has fixed
their issues with that app). One thing that I configured the motherboard monitor with was a sensor called CUSL2 which was reading very high at 147
with no CPU activity not sure which sensor this is though.

What are people's thoughts on AMD Heatsinks/Fans do they usually run hot, or do most people but the retail for the warrenty and then just buy an
aftermarket Fan/heatsink which is better?

Thanks,
Nick

I never needed to change the power supply as this case has an Antec 350W . It has never caused any problems in the past.

Have you upgraded the power supply in the case too ?

The standard AMD HSF is not that good. I would recommend an aftermarket HSF.
My TT Volcano 7+ has kept my Athlon1800 and now the 2500 at 40c idle, 46c
is the hottest (30c ambient). There are many quality HSF units that will
significantly lower your cpu temp. ThermalTake, Coolermaster, Vantec etc..

Good Luck

Thanks for the info Harry. I'll let you know what the CUSL2 temp reads
when I put some load on it. But what I'm thinking is that in the end
I'll have to get a better HSF as the AMD is just enough to get through
with.

If the 147F (63C) is the CPU diode then this isnt too high if you
consider that the max. recommended temprature for an XP2100 is 90C
(194F)

I will check my settings tonight and see what CUSL2 shows for me. I
know I have 3 temp. readings with MBM. If I remember rightly they are

18C (64F)
34C (93F)
61C (140F)

The middle one (34C) is the CPU socket temp. and the bottom one (61C)
is the CPU diode temp. FWIW when I boot up, MBM shows the CPU Diode
temp at about 45C (113F) and this increases to 61C (140F) in about 2
minutes and then stays there. Under load it will rise to 62C (143F).

As I say I will double check my settings tonight.

If your 147F WAS the socket temperature then I would expect the CPU
diode temperature to read 180F+ !!

You can try taking the side panel off the case and see if the
temparatures go down. If they drop a big amount then airflow could be
an issue.

Hi Nick

I check my CUSL2 and it IS the CPU diode thats being reported. My room
was 20C (68F) last night and the CUSL2 showed 135F whilst idle. Once I
ran up Half life it moved up to 61C (141F)

Your original post says that
The CPU temp under normal conditions is about 128-135 degrees F
(using the latest ASUS PC Probe) but when I use the CPU at 100%
it jumps anywhere between 145-147 degrees.

This is absolutely fine. I am running between 135 and 141 on a cool
day. When its hot I run 141F to 150F.

Dont forget these temps are the CPU diode and as long as they show
less than 90C (194F) you are fine.

Hope this helps

Harry
