ASUS PROBE questions

1. My MOBO is ASUS A7V266, CPU is Athlon 1.0 Ghz

The ASUS Probe setup program reports MOBO and CPU threshhold temps as
follows:

MOBO threshold temp 80 C
CPU threshold temp 95 C

As you proceed with the install it says it's installing the following
settings:

MOBO critical thresh 75 C
CPU current thresh 86 C
CPU max thresh 95 C

Is there an online reference where I can find what the recommended
temperature settings are?


2. The ASUS Probe program has an option that says:

ENABLE SOFTWARE CPU COOLING
* always
* when CPU is overheated

No explanatory information is provided.

MY QUESTION: Does it actually do anything? Does it depend on how you set
the thresholds? I am a little wary of trial-and-error testing of this
feature.

Asus's cpu cool (cooling.exe in asus folder) only works with some
chipsets, it shouldn't hurt anything if you just run it, if the CPU temp
doesn't drop at idle at least a few degrees C after 5 mins or so then
it's probably not made for your mobo chipset, there are other software
coolers, try google.

Asus PC Probe only reads the CPU socket on AMD's, so it's display is
about 10C less then the actual CPU die temp just at idle, possibly 15C
to 20C less at full loads.

AMD specs show the Athlon 1GHz t-bird is rated to a max cpu die temp of
95C. I would set the CPU temp alarm to around 65C or so.

opps, make that 90C.

The maximum die temperature is 90C for frequencies up to 1000 MHz, and
95C for frequencies above 1000 MHz on AMD T-birds.

To follow along with what Ed said, I watch the temperatures after giving the
machine a workout with a program, most likely a game, that really causes the
CPU to work. I then set my alarm limits about 5C above that. Note that your
internal temperatures will be higher when the room temperature is higher so
this is best done in the summer. I believe by doing it this way it gives you
faster warning that the cooling for whatever reason isn't what it used to
be.
I also prefer Motherboard Monitor to Probe since it provides a readout of
the temperature in the system tray. It is a bit more complex though.
