Asus website sttaes that the board can handle a maximum of 8 gigs RAM; does
this board suffer the same limittaion as ASUS PC-DL (that board will NOT
recognize full 4 Gigs of RAM)
If you download the E7505 Northbridge datasheet, the details of the
memory controller are on page 167. The address map starts on page
145.
http://developer.intel.com/design/chipsets/e7505/datashts/251932.htm
According to Intel, the limit is 16GB, using 4GB registered DIMMs.
There is a loss of 0.06GB, leaving 15.94GB actual. What I don't know
how to interpret, is if the PCI space is always independent of the
16GB "host addressable" space or not. Their example of 4GB of memory
plus 1GB of PCI space is not an exhaustive condition.
The following forum handles a lot of dually discussions. This thread
discusses 7505 based boards, but doesn't discuss the Asus board too much:
http://forums.2cpu.com/showthread.php?threadid=29535&highlight=ppdlw
In the same thread, there is a list of motherboards using the 7505,
at the bottom of this page:
http://forums.2cpu.com/showthread.php?postid=276416
I haven't read the whole thread, but it is strange that the Asus
board receives hardly any mention at all. One disturbing thing I
noticed in the thread, is not all the boards discussed seem to have
the same memory handling capabilities, using the same chipset - I
cannot explain why they all don't match what Intel has listed in the
7505 datasheet, unless it is a BIOS issue or something.
For chuckles, I tried the Crucial website, and the PP-DLW must
have the largest list of supported memory of any Asus motherboard:
http://www.crucial.com/store/listpa...oards&mfr=ASUS&cat=RAM&model=PP-DLW&submit=Go
For just $3996.00, you can place 8GB of PC3200 registered memory in
the machine.
The Kingston site lists only registered ECC for the PP-DLW, so they
aren't quite as adventurous as Crucial:
http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/con...sp?SysID=+14796+&distributor=0&submit1=Search
Kingston will charge you $3932 for 8GB of PC2100 registered memory.
Not nearly as good a deal.
